Wake/Google Maps nav announcements not heard over car Bluetooth

In the settings for each app, the box is checked to send nav sounds over the car Bluetooth. But, no such thing happens. Rather, no sound is heard at all. If I turn off that option I can hear the nav sounds from the phone, but that defeats the purpose of being connected to Bluetooth.
