!!!!!!warning about verizon 32gb sd card for $100 bucks!!!!!

I just received and installed my 32gb card today. To compare performance, I made short video clips with the original class 4/16gb card and with the new 32gb/class 2 card, that consist of panning with dense subject matter, which to me has been most likely to display when frame dropouts occur due to lagging processing. There may be other ways to test and compare that I haven't thought of yet, or lack the skills, knowledge, software, or equipment to perform but this is a first attempt, anyway.

I really don't see any significant differences between them. They are both a bit jittery, partly because of me, and partly, I think because of the low frame rate of the DX, but I think they are pretty comparable.

FWIW, the file size on my 18 second clip above was 17.9 MB, and of course it was recorded to the microSD card. I guess that would translate to about 1 MB/s, and 8-10 mb/s, which would be within the class 2 capability. I wouldn't try to record while simultaneously doing other data intensive activity to or from the same memory.

its been posted before the android os is capped you only will see the speed difference when you transfer files from android to computer.

Several comments in this thread have predicted that the quality of video recordings would be impacted. That is why I wanted to actually record comparable videos with both to test for myself, rather than make a decision based on conjecture.

The speed of transferring files from Android to the computer is a whole different question, and of lesser importance to me. It could slow it down, assuming the Droid X is capable of transferring at a rate beyond the capability of a class 2 memory. Maybe, maybe not. I'd love to see some objective data one way or the other.

so what companies actually make a 32GB microSDHC?

Kingston does not

Crucial does not

Sandisk makes 1 thats had 3 reviews on their site, 2 good 1 bad.

I went through NewEgg and they only list 1 32GB card and I believe its a misplaced SD card, not a micro. Tigerdirect does not list any micros above 16GB either. I'm not even going to bother with eBay, already went through flash memory havoc with my card for my Canon SLR, can't trust anyone these days.

I personally dont like buying junk computer parts, so I dont plan to be cheap on the card either. It appears that a 32GB micro is going to cost more than I paid for the phone anyway, the question is.... where to buy?

Here is a question for you in order to help clarify card write speed. How long does it take you to transfer music to your phone's SD card? :)

Until I understood the classes of cards, I could not fathom why my iPod touch would load 300 songs in short order and my phone would still be laboring after 20 minutes.

Card speed does matter. Trust me, if you use your phone as a music player AND you swap music back and forth from your PC/Mac, get the class 6 card.

I'm happy with.my card. Better then paying 3tones the cost of faster card.

seems someone on another forum has gotten a 32GB card to work. There is some question as to whether the card or real or fake, fact of the matter is the phone still recognizes the size.

The 32gb card from Verizon works and the size is recognized. I don't find any preceding comments in this thread that indicate such issues. Can you clarify?

I've seen some ill-informed responses here still. To make it clear, when you guys take a picture or video in the camera/camcorder app, the droid x caches the image/video to ram before writing to the card, so the write speed of the card is not going to bottleneck performace.

The major difference you'll see is in transfering data.

To add some perspective to the classes debate, I ran more of a real-world test, based on my likely use of the card. I transferred 4 movies, totaling 3.23GB, to a Class 6/16GB Sandisk card, and then to a Class 2/32GB Sandisk card.

The 16GB card took 6 minutes & 15 seconds

The 32GB card took 10 minutes & 9 seconds.

That's an average of 1 extra minute per movie. I don't know about the rest of you, but that's 1 minute of time I'm willing to sacrifice for twice the capacity.

Great minds, as they say... In the same interest, I just finished a similar transfer rate experiment, using Second Copy on my PC w W7, which will be my normal process, since it will only transfer new, updated files on subsequent runs:

16GB Class 4 8.98 GB 15:06 min/sec 9.87 MB/Sec
32GB Class 2 8.98 GB 18:10 min/sec 8.24 MB/Sec

In this case, with this application and configuration, the Class 4 card transfer rate is 19.8% faster than the Class 2.

As I mentioned, my backup times in the future will be very small in comparison, utilizing Second Copy, so I think the 20% differential is trivial (for me), compared to the advantage of having twice the capacity.

This, added to my previous comparisons of videos taken with both MicroSD cards make me very content that I am basically sacrificing nothing of importance.

Lol, Vic. It's funny that we were both doing that at the same time. I think our results should ease any minds that are concerned about major impacts to the performance between these cards.

We know the slow down on transfer rates. I think most won't to know how the two perform in the X? To me it doesn't matter I love the room.

Actually, there appears to be some debate over transfer speeds also, which is why I posted my real world test results.

But, if that's the only question, it performs just fine. I've watched movies on it, listened to music, snapped photo's, recorded video, and navigated the card without any hiccups.

Me too, I agree.

Anyone know if the $99 deal is still active? If so, how do you get it. I just ordered my DroidX and I tried to order the 32GB card, but the rep said the price was now $149.

I'm hoping that he was just ringing it up incorrectly because he hadn't heard of the deal.
