Wary of Motorola...

The Atrix looks amazing. Based on the specs and the reviews I totally want it. However, I'm really wary of getting another Motorola phone.

I have a backflip right now...and frankly, though the phone had lots of promise (real smartphone with a keyboard? Android on ATT? Sold!) it has proven to be, well, a piece of crap. In addition to being underpowered (cannot play Angry Birds, people...thats just ridiculous for something that's supposed to be an actual smartphone and not a 'feature phone'), I'm on my 3rd one in a little over a year, and after only 3 months with this one I'm about ready to turn that one in for warranty, too. Before this I had a Q9. The reviews were great, and I liked the phone quite a bit...except that it, too, went through 3 warranty replacements before I got rid of it. I keep buying these Motorola phones a couple months after launch cuz they look great...but I've seriously had nothing but issues with my Motorola phones for about 3 years now.

I've read the reviews here, but they're decidedly mixed. Anyone have any thoughts? Go for it? Don't touch it? It just...it looks so shiny...

I'm not too happy with Motorola right now to be honest. The atrix is my first Motorola product, and while I love it dearly, it has some issues (although most electronics do these days). I bought one around the 2nd day it first came out, and it was great except that I had to get that one replaced before my 30 days with AT&T were up, due to it severely overheating (to the point of almost burning me inside my pocket while it was just idling with nothing up but Handcent). Got that replaced pronto, and this 2nd atrix has never had that issue. However, well past my 30 days now, this atrix one day randomly rebooted, which normally wouldn't be an issue (that happens to smartphones all the time. No matter the platform. Happened a bit on my Bold 9000 from RIM years back too). But usually it's no big deal, just a little irritating - it restarts and everything is fine. Well, this time, my phone rebooted itself while I was using it, and when it came back on, it decided to never load past the red "M" dual core motorola logo, and instead issue me an error in white text at the top. Needless to say, it never came back, and I was forced to (with the help of the fine people of this forum) completely reset everything by hooking it up to my PC and flashing it back to the sbf file. That sucked, not only because it just plain sucked, but because I did absolutely nothing to cause that. People might say "well if you root things may go wrong", no, I wasn't rooted, I was nothing but stock. I didn't even tempt the devil, yet it still happened to me, for apparently no reason at all. Thank the lord for the internet, without it I would've had to ship my phone to Motorola themselves for a "fix" or a "replacement", dunno which.

The Atrix has some known issues you MUST look out for when you buy yours (if you do): Probably #1 on the list would be the "muffled voice" issue, which is huge, and affects a lot of handsets. What happens is when you're on a call with someone, that person can not hear you properly/clearly, and it usually gets worse as the days go on. Some have reported that it got so bad, their voice was basically just a sound to someone else, completely incomprehensible.
Definitely be on a watch for that, it can render your phone without its main purpose - making/receiving calls.

The atrix is known to have colors appear closer to the yellow side of the spectrum. For some users the fingerprint scanner doesn't work properly - I had issues before, but when motorola released a software update, my problems went away (though some other people still claim to have issues with it). The atrix does get rather hot towards the bottom left (or was it right?) side of the phone. It shouldn't get to the point of almost burning you, though, so be careful of that. Nevertheless, it does get warmer than most other phones, possibly due to its dual-core processor, but I've no idea. It's just another known fact. It's not usually a problem though, and it's mainly only hot when I'm playing a graphics-intensive game such as the ones found in the Tegra Zone.

Another HUGE thing, which irritates the CRAP out of me, is the atrix loses connectivity very frequently. When it does, it finds it again pretty quickly, but if you're in the middle of an online game such as playing Dungeon defenders online, consider your game COMPLETELY RUINED. I am getting SO sick of this. Once the connection is lost, the phone seems incapable of immediately picking up where it left off (it only take a half-second of lost connectivity), and the game will come crashing down, everyone being kicked out at any second. This is mainly the biggest issue if you're playing a game online, but you can also visibly see the issue with less dire effects if you just open the Android Market from the phone. Usually, it will immediately pop up & tell you you need to hit "Retry" because you have no connection (even though you really do, according to your status bar). Sometimes you have to hit "retry" two or three times in a ROW to get the market to finally load. Some people have reported hitting retry up to nine times in a row before it showing, though I've never experienced it to be that horrid. It is nothing major, just irritating. You can also sometimes see this when loading up the browser (or a 3rd party browser such as Dolphin, too). It will ask you to hit retry, and then afterwards, it usually loads right up.

The reason I'm going into such detail is so you have all the facts and can best determine what to do for yourself. Because, while this only one random anonymous guy-over-the-internet's case, my older brother just got a motorola Xoom tablet about a month ago now...

He is getting super frustrated with it, for a lot of various reasons. I feel bad for him, because it's his first android experience and he doesn't know whether to blame this stuff on Google or on Motorola.

The reason I'm getting wary of Motorola products myself is that his Xoom is experiencing very similar issues that I am experiencing with my Atrix...particularly the loss-connectivity thing. Although his seems to be worse - sometimes he has to hit retry when trying to load the market or browser up to 10 or more times...it gets worse, when he attempts to download an app from the market, sometimes it hangs FOREVER at "Downloading", never even getting to the installing part. He could wait 20 mins and it never does anything. Sometimes hitting the back button to load a different page gets the download to begin, but even that doesn't always work, because when he goes back in, the download cancels itself. He is getting pretty frustrated. Yes, btw, we both have perfectly working wifi routers with great connections to it, if anyone wants to know.

Honestly, I can't tell you what to choose, but my next android phone will not be from Motorola, it's looking like. I'm not very happy anymore. If I hadn't extended my contract for another 2 years with the atrix and could somehow get a new smartphone for the upgrade price without being eligible, I'd be selling my slightly used but in great condition atrix to somebody (along with the HD Multimedia dock) and getting a different android phone on AT&T. :-\ It's up to you, though.

You say the phone looks so shiny, but, trust me, ALL new phones you see will look shiny & fanatstic :-) Check out that Samsung Infuse..daaamn!

My Atrix runs alot better than the Samsung Captivate it replaced. The Captivate did 2 things better than the Atrix, and one of them I don't care about. It reproduced colors better, which I miss. It also ran a little cooler than the Atrix, which is virtually meaningless to me.

No problems with mine at all. Runs well, fast, holds connection, doesn't get hot, colors and text look fine. I'm completely satisfied at this point, after about a month of ownership.

The other hardware issue which potential Atrix owners have to watch out for is the so-called "jumpy screen". If you have it, there is no known fix.

This defect shows up in a range of effects. In the milder effect, the upper 20-30 percent of the touch screen goes dead. Sometime a re-boot of the phone solves it; in other cases, it's a permanent loss.

I have this defect, but it's a much smaller dead zone than many report, and the dead effect comes and goes. For me, it's not enough to really bother me, and it never got worse.

But at the other end of the spectrum of effect, the touch screen goes absolutely nuts, and pushes buttons, scrolls, starts and stops apps, and otherwise makes the device entirely unusable, like it's possesed by a demon. I've seen vids of the effect, torturing an Atrix. Obviously, the only fix is a return.

What you have to do is use the new Atrix like crazy, for the 30 day trial period. While not every Atrix is defective, in the majority of cases, the defects are gonna show up during the return period. Just don't ignore any defects which may seem minor, because some of these get worse with time, like the muffled voice, and render the phone useless.

Got a bad Atrix? Take it right back. Simple enough.

But....if you get a good Atrix, it IS a really great phone.

Great phone when it is working right but....Since the first update I have had connectivity issues (voice and data). The second update fixed the voice to some degree but added to my data problems. Where before I would have the H+ insignia but no little data arrows now I get this and sometimes the red circle slash saying no connectivity. I have spent hours on the phone with ATT. They sent a replacement and say that there are network improvements going on in my area.
I don't want another replacemnet Atrix, at this point I want to get as far away from Motorola as I can. Hopefully Att will either buy the phone back or allow me to get a comparable phone from another maker.
Like I said, great phone when it's workin right. Try it, but keep a good eye on whats going on and dump it before the 30 days if there are any problems.

PS The second Atrix has the same problems as the first.

ATT said there are network improvements going on, ever think that instead of two phones having the same exact defect that it could be ATT's fault? This phone is one of the highest rated phones anywhere you go and all phones are gonna have a problem or 2. This is definitely going to be the phone I get when my upgrade comes around in 2 weeks.

Same area on a Blackberry and the occasional dropped call. Never a red circle slash. Yes it was not 4G but these problems were happening before ATT flipped the switch on for that. I am not the only one. Read Jonneh's comment above.

Just an FYI, You guys with Motorola problems may want to join Motorola's support forums. They are doing good stuff there with Motorola reps addressing issues in the threads and recording what they see there getting it back to the engineers and perhaps addressed in future updates.

Motorola's forum takes some getting used to because its their own format, not then standard layout like here.

I have been monitoring the X and Zoom forums and seeing lots of issues addressed especially with the zoom.

I am a Motorola fan and my Droid1 has served me very well.

good luvck

my first smartphone was a motorola

My second smartphone was an HTC

My third smartphone was an apple

And my current phone is, obviously, another motorola.

If i had to rank them, I'd say HTC was the best, and motorola was a pretty solid second. Being stuck with ATT, i didn't have a flagship HTC phone to get, so I happily got a motorola. I've been very happy with the quality, and reliability of my atrix. However, no phone i've ever had has been flawless, and the atrix is no exception. If you can wait for a dual core HTC to come out on a carrier you can purchase, I would recommend doing that. The atrix is still pretty sweet though, I love this phone.

Ok first and foremost...that pic above of apple is great got me laughing hard...I needed that lmao.
Now for the info....I had an IPhone 3gs can't say its trash but can't say I was a huge fan,it was nice for games and the display was really clear but it sucked with battery and emails as well as customizing the screen..
Atrix is a good phone its fast and has removable sd card and battery..so in a nutshell if you dont have an IPhone you have an Android lol and you can expand you memory and swap you battery instead of looking for the nearest charger.you can modify your phone alot and you canload custom ROMS.
If you have one that has a muffled voice issu or gets hot then make sure to test it extensively over the 30 period so you can return it and get a new one, flaws in hardware or a bad batch of devices always happens with technology especially with new gadgets so its acceptable just make sure you tinker with it all day long until you're sure this phone is for you.
Also iphone or any most other smart phones dont have the webtop and you can get the hack for it and have yourself a PC on the go

yeah I noticed that my Atrix gets pretty warm when it is running. Not that I find it to be a huge deal as my blackberry 8900 would do the same thing. Biggest difference is instead of having that stupid annoying watch symble I can still use my phone.

I will say the Atrix is my first motorla phone ever and in the 2 weeks I have had it I have loved it. My other phones brands have been LG, Sony, samgsung, toshiba and RIM. Now all of them but RIM were dumb phones and of them Toshiba was the worse and I say the rest held up pretty well to abuse. One sony phone fail due to water getting on the mike and breaking it and the other failed to live threw the washing machine. LG phone well it lived threw a rain storm of my running soaking wet by the time I got back to my car.
RIM well it is still working after 18 months with me and my Ex her phone lived threw having a coke split on it.

Either way I am looking forward to seeing how Atrix stands up to the others in terms of build quality.

If it goes anything like my Droid1 did , it will just get better after updates.

I got my D1 in January 2010 and it ran hot and battery life was not as good as it is now but after all the OTA updates the thing just kept improving. I still use it and its pretty much trouble free. I'm on Verizon so I wait for the Bionic. I am here keeping up with the smaller version of it.

FYI if you join Motorola's support forums you will see lots of things about the phone and Moto reps responding to many of them. Lots to learn there. Lots to see that will scare you or make you feel lucky. But remember, more people are happy than all the ones posting.
