Weird battery drain while on power save mode

Last night before going to sleep I decided to turn on the power saving mode on my phone at 85% thinking it would act like doze and lose little to no power while I was sleeping. This was around 12:30 am. I woke up around 3:30 am and grabbed my phone to check the time and it was burning hot. The battery life at that time was down to 7%.
I checked the battery usage and the app highest on the list was the stock email app at 7%. Not sure what might of happened in those 3 hours or what stayed on, but I always close all my apps and this had never happened before.
Has anyone gone thru this? If so, what caused it and how did you fix it.

Thanks.

To save your battery put your phone on air plane mode and it will only lose like 2% and stop using power saving mode it bad even for me

The problem would be nothing to do with power save but just a coincidence that one of your apps decided to stay awake for whatever reason. Power save is on by default on my phone and get I excellent battery life.

Losing that amount of battery is odd for just a mail app because I don't even lose that amount when the screen is on while playing CPU hungry racing game or something, so i would suggest it's something else in addition to your mail app (and it's definitely not to do with power save), It could be an extremely weak phone signal or maybe your mail app is constantly trying to download an attachment every few seconds.

A hot battery(if it were left in the sun for example) alone is enough to cause severe battery drain.

I figured I would be able to see which app drained the battery that much. And it would definitely be way more than 7%. I actually have solid signal here. so much so that I never turn on WiFi when home unless I want to link up with my pc or TV's. Either way this is puzzling to me

Is that the stock battery settings that say the mail app is using 7%? I find that it doesn't give an accurate representation of what's going on. Using something like GSam battery monitor would show you how long your phone has been awake plus all the apps(inc system apps) that have been using your battery.

Other options if you want to investigate are 3C Toolbox or System Panel where you can set to record your phone overnight and it displays when each app has been active etc

Yes it's the stock battery usage app. I used the Gsam battery app before, but I didn't like having an extra app working in the background. I think I will use it temporarily to see if I can figure out why this happened.

Don't worry about how much it uses. It usually virtually nothing. Although my phone hasn't been off the charger for very long(about 3 hours) it shows that GSam has used "0.0%" which gives you an indication of how much it would use after (say) a night's sleep. In 24 hours it would probably use about 0.1% of the battery which is far less than many other apps even when they're not used.
