I started using antivirus about this time last year with my N1 and couldn't imagine not having it on my phone. I've used AVG, Norton, Lookout and just last night I downloaded Kaspersky.

Late last year there were several articles floating around saying 2011 was the year of mobile phone attacks and I couldn't imagine not using one...especially in light of the recent apps being removed by Google.

So, that being said, which are you using, if any? How often do you run a scan (or do you just scan apps/files as you d/l them)?

I am surprised this thread is not a dominant thread. I have been concerned about security since switching to android.

I just got Lookout (free). I contemplated for a day between AVG (free) and Lookout. While AVG free version does have more options than Lookout's free version, Lookout just seemed more polished and has potential to be updated faster.

I set a phone-wide scan once a week, and let it scan apps when I dl them. So far so good :)
The premium version of Lookout does have some neat features, but with MotoBlur, most of them are redundant, except for the Privacy feature (which I really like and use).

You should add an option for none. I don't use any, but if I had to it would probably be lookout since it seems like it's more polished.

I'm using Lookout
I lost my faith in Norton when my Nokia 6260 got virused & was an inch away from Bricking\Friying & Norton didn't even do a thing !!!
I also have a bad experience with AVG , since the desktop version removed\deleted all my apps setups after classfying them as Viruses

Thanks for the information regarding security. I just finished installing Lookout (simple-took less than 2 minutes).

Lookout didn't play nice with my phone. I use Netquin. Netquin also scans all storage, not just apps like lookout does.

Sent from my Froyo Fascinate using Tapatalk.

I used lookout for a while but like the previous poster it just didn't agree with my phone. I'm using Norton now and seems to be working well so far. It also scans all files and not just apps.

I can't figure out why none isn't an option. Call me naive, but it seems like as long as I am aware of what I download and I read the little "This application requires access to..." notification, then all should be well.

That does seem a little naive, but to each his own. I'm using Lookout right now, but I might look into netquin like a previous poster stated.

The Norton Beta sent all of my incoming calls directly to voicemail without ringing. I didn't like that.

A question for those with some knowledge about antivirus software:

I run a scan using my pc antivirus program when I connect via usb. I'm wondering if this is adequate protection, or if there are different 'strains' of virus (aimed at the phone's OS) that may not be detected by traditional pc based programs?

Thanks.

I don't download any apps that I don't have reasonable cause to trust, so I don't use an antivirus. As for the issue of those apps removed from the market...

Google needs to add an equivalent of su + the Superuser app to Android, make it a required feature for 'with Google' branding and allow users to gain root access without having to hack their phone (like every desktop operating system, except for maybe Haiku, idk about it). That way, Google can work on aggressively patching root exploits without stepping on the toes of the modding community. Also, they really need to make Android more modular so that even with manufacturer skins, they can push out security updates to all Android phones/devices without worry of bricking them.

In my opinion, to ever gain reasonable security (and not become a breeding ground for viruses like Windows) Android needs to take a long hard look at what *nix systems (whether it be on the server or the desktop) have been doing for a long time. Google is right when they say 'Android is not Linux, it's uses the Linux kernel', but it's still no reason to be slipshod about security.

I'm with you. I never use any on my computers and won't be on my phone either.

I use Lookout and have since it was new so I am grandfathered in to the premium part for free. It is really polished, backs up my pictures for free, scans all apps, etc. I like that i am able to schedule these actions for overnight when I am hooked up to WIFI, plus they are constantly updating their own database of scam apps.

To be on the safe side I downloaded Lookout. I emailed the antivirus company I use on my pc and they told me when the phone is connected to the computer it is just scanning the storage area.
