What are the best things that you can do after rooting your kindle? Is it worth it to go ahead and root it? I just wanted to know your thoughts on root benefits.

Android Market
All the Google Apps
Customized wallpapers
Customized Launcher
Etc, Etc, Etc

Yes it is worth it! Root, install what you want, customize how you want, then unroot.

There really is no downside. If you are worried about rooting, and have to ask this question then you should probably using Apple devices not android.

Rooting allows you to load up the Android Market as well as the other Google apps such as Gmail. The constantly changing wallpaper on the Kindle drove me crazy and rooting lets you customize the wallpaper.

While the Amazon video streaming doesn't work on rooted devices, it's very easy to temporarily unroot to watch Amazon videos.

It's not difficult to do and if you have any questions just ask.

And you have never had to ask a question, no need to be rude.

Absolutely, you're missing a lot of the Fire's potential if you have no access to apps. Rooting using the BurritoRoot3 method was very simple

Rooting any device gives certain abilities that you just don't have while running a stock OS. Asking if it's "worth it" is really a matter of opinion and we know what they say about opinions...

Since Kindle Fire's releases there have already been at least two OTA updates which in both cases has caused problems for rooted fires; you will lose root access each time Amazon pushes a new update. So be prepared for that, it can be a headache.

Personally, my Fire is rooted and running the latest version of ICS and I don't miss any of the stock options but can switch back easily if that changes. It's all about FUN so have fun whatever you decide and do whats best for you. :D

Are all the amazon stock features still functional after rooting? Like on the Nooks you can't download books or magazines after they are rooted. Just wondering.

After rooting the Amazon Video streaming doesn't work, but it's no big deal. You can use an app like OTA Rootkeeper to temporairily unroot if you want to watch Amazon videos. Purchasing books through the Kindle store isn't affected.

From my perspective, and I know others will disagree: If you enjoy messing around with the the device itself (flashing different ROMs and the like), you root. If not, and you just want to enjoy the content, leave it stock. There is no added functionality derived from rooting the Fire. In fact, it adds more steps if you want to watch Amazon video.

As far as access to non-Amazon App Store apps goes - if you already have an Android device (like a smartphone), it is very simple to transfer the apps over to the Fire. If not, you can still get all the apps with little difficulty. You do not need root to install the apps (outside of perhaps gmail, and the stock app provides 90% of gmail's functionality anyway).

You can access your gmail thru the stock email app. How do you transfer apps from your phone to Kindle?

Although you can access your gmail through the stock app, some users claim that gmail has some features that the stock app doesn't have (I honestly don't know what they are; I just use Inbox and Sent folders, and it's fine for me).

You can transfer apps directly from your phone to the Fire several ways that I know of :

1. Make a backup of the app on your phone (using ES File Explorer or Astro); then, if the file is small enough, email it to yourself; then open the email on The Fire and download it.
2. Get a dropbox or box.net account, make a backup of the apk on the phone and upload the apk from your phone to the cloud, then download it onto the Fire.
3. Install Frostwire on both devices and transfer the apk over wifi from the phone to the Fire (it can sometimes work over 3g without wifi).
4. Install Wifi File Explorer on your phone, make a backup of the apk, then connect to your phone from the browser on the Fire, and download the apk
5. Make a backup of the app on the phone, transfer the apk to your pc, then connect your Fire to your pc and put the apk on the Fire

Backed up and emailed to myself the apk for the Dolphin browser which isn't available at 'Zon app store. Super easy, thanks dude. :)

My wife wants a Kindle Fire after experiencing Kindle envy at her book club. I have rooted several android phones over the years so am not shy about that if I need to, but is there a way to send the google android market apk (or Play or whatever they are calling it now) by email so as to get google apps without root. I guess my question is will it install like any other app?

The Market won't install without rooting. After it's been installed you can unroot and the Market will still work. Haven't moved to Google Play on my KF but I expect that you would still need root to install. Rooting the KF breaks Amazon Video streaming but you can easily switch back and forth between rooted and unrooted states by using OTA Rootkeeper, which is available free from the Market.

Does anyone know if after I root my fire can I. Set up a proxy server? If so can i then unroot and it will still connect through the proxy?

I am in Australia for the next two months and I'm trying to figure out a way to get accees to amazon prime while I'm here

I didn't root, but I did update the launcher.

downloaded the apk for Go Launcher from their website: GO Launcher | GO

I have the look of a tablet without the hassle of rooting. I don't NEED all the google apps for me to be happy with the fire. Worked well for me.

Oh, but first I downloaded ES File Explorer so I could find the Go Launcher .apk on the fire. Sorry, skipped that step in my explanation.

Hi guys, I just ordered one of the refurbs for $139 today. I'm still reading through everything so I'm sorry if this has already been addressed. I don't have it in my hands yet, but from what I have read so far, one of the things I want it for most, HBOgo, won't work without it being rooted. I was wondering if I root the Fire will it still function as a "Kindle Device" so that I can get my magazine subscriptions and read books through the Kindle Lending Library, or it will it then be viewed as any other mobile device?

I think you can use hbogo without rooting. Sideload the app. Turn off wifi. Start hbogo. It will tell you that you need an Internet connection. Turn on wifi. Click "Try again" button.
