what can we do with stock recovery?

i have samsung galaxy s3 i want to know that which thing i can flash by stock recovery if i can't flash anything with stock recovery then why there is option (apply updates from external storage) please told me which firmware or rom or custom recovery that i can flash or install with stock recovery
