I am going to begin developing a ROM, I have wanted to switch to Linux for a while but have not been able to since my dad doesn't think that there is good compatibility, so I have been using virtual machines and Live usbs... now I am going to begin developing Android roms so I will be happily forced into Ubuntu ... I am going to buy the machine used for about 50-75 dollars... I can upgrade the RAM and format it myself... can you help me find a decent machine of eBay? Thanks!

Anything with a core 2 duo (even the merom chips from 2006) should run modern distros well. Anything like that or better will work just fine. Just steer clear of anything that says pentium or celeron as compile times will take forever. Granted there are a few core 2 duo era chips that have a "pentium" sticker on them but most times Id still steer clear of those as well.

While I have run a server with a 2004 pentium 4 HT chip from 9.04 to 11.04 just fine at work, it was a CLI only server.
