We didn't root them. We just used them stock.
I did update the OS at least once, and I put new batteries in both of them about a year ago. But other than that, they were pretty much the same old units.
I think the thing that allowed us both to use them for so long was that we both used some tablets over the years that connected to our WiFi at home, and for me, also at work. So most of the web-surfing, etc., was done with our tablets.
Whenever I tried opening a web page, unless it was very simple, on the S2, it would virtually lock the phone up, requiring a hard-reset/power-down and back up. So I just got to where I almost never attempted to look anything up or do that sort of thing from the phone.
The S2 did my email, texting, took good photos, kept notes, worked fine with netflix and hulu, and all of that just fine. But surfing the web was downright painful!
These Note 8s are amazing, though. Very fast and responsive, even when surfing over the cell phone data system. The camera is nicer than that in the S2, as well, but I must say that I got a lot of good utility out of the S2's camera over the years. I often used it to capture/copy documents and to take photos of gizmos I was taking apart so I could refer to those photos when reassembling or rewiring things. And of course, the obligatory cat photos, too!
But these Note 8s are a huge step up, that's for darned sure!
It was my wife's birthday, and I asked her if she'd like a new phone. She said she'd LOVE one. So we went to the local AT&T store, and came out with two Note 8s. (I had to have one, too, of course!)
We're loving them a LOT.
