What Do People Have Against MotoBlur?

I often go back and forth from LPP and motoblur. I like both. LPP has started to crash lately. I had an EVO once and I liked Sense. The widgets are awesome, but I still like blur better.

I would gladly pay a $20 premium to get a de-skinned, vanilla UI out of the box. Not because all skins are worthless, but because I want to be able to receive OS updates in a timely manner.

A winning formula for OEMs: give consumers choice! Release the vanilla OS upgrade ASAP, and then take your time to perfect your proprietary skin. Allow it to be "bolted-on" so that we can enjoy the upgraded OS now if we choose, and then apply the skin when it's ready. There's no good reason why we should wait for you to work out the kinks on a skin that we don't even want.

Anybody else with me?

while that is a wonderful idea, that will never happen. there are executives at motorola that get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars that know what we want better than we do!

To be honest, there really isn't alot of evidence to support the Skin = slow update theory. It's just something that everyone repeats constantly. For example, the EVO, if I'm not mistaken got its official Froyo update before the Droid 1, which was practically a dev phone. The Nexus One IS a dev phone, and that still hasn't seen Gingerbread yet-and unsurprisingly so, since it doesn't seem to offer the most stable of experiences on the device it was released on(Nexus S).

Crap Moto devices aside (Cliq, Devour, etc...) I think they've been pretty good with their updates. I think the only manufacturers that you could build a strong case for in this regard is Samsung and Sony.

I Think I Actually Like Blur...

I was using Liberty ROM - which is excellent, btw, wondering how difficult would it be to regain the use of Moto's Camera. I prefer that one over the AOSP camera because of its layout, touch to focus, and use of scenes. Thankfully Liberty allows you to switch apps with the click of a single button, does all the terminal work for you, nice touch. After taking a picture, of course you have the option to edit, but to get that to work, I had to hit the Liberty toolbox again and install the Blur Gallery.

Its also a major convenience for me to send multiple blocks of text (with the aid of Chrome-To-Phone) to my phone. Having the Clipboard allows me to store several at a time. Unfortunately there was nothing I could do regain that function, ditto for HDMI Out, or the battery manager which is pretty much a simpler version of juice defender-very useful tool for conserving battery.

Its then that I realize that I actually DONT want an AOSP experience. I mean, isn't that why Cyanogen is so popular? Their ROM is based on the source, with added functionality added to it, sans the bloat. Admittedly, I think Moto's launcher sucks, but I'm not too big a fan of the stock alternative either. I have no use for Moto's widgets, but I find AOSP's Market, Homescreen tips, and their news and music widgets equally as useless. I basically found myself wanted to add back all of the "Blur" stuff, while ignoring/replacing elements from both stock, and Blur that I don't like. Most of my problem with their software is the way they handle contact management, and just their overall look and feel, but the latter can be corrected with a simple Framework flash.

Anyway, I'll finish this post with 2 comments
1. Liberty is dope, but I'm currently running Apex which allows more flexibility of Blur/AOSP.
2. Sorry Mods if this is redundant, and belonged in that other thread about people not liking Motoblur.

no prob, bushido, but i did toss this into the original thread if for any other reason to spur a constructive debate.

i also agree with a lot of your points. as you can see from my bar up top, i also run apex on my X, for many of the same reasons that you do. i think where people get upset with manufacturers UI's like sense and blur is that they dont have a choice in the matter. this is why i think its awesome that the custom rom scene exists on android, and that there are roms out there like apex and liberty that give the end-user the choice to tweak their devices as they see fit. there are a lot of features in blur that i love, and a lot that i dont, and i love the fact that apex lets me pick and choose which i want to keep, and which can hit the bricks. i can only hope that we will see similarly featured roms on the bionic and atrix

Can't you disable Sense and only run stock Android if you wanted to?

nope, only if you root and flash a custom aosp rom (assuming there is one available for your device), and even then, there are still usually traces of the manufacturer UI.

People seem to read "blur" and immediately assume it's the same exact thing that was on a device like, let's say, the devour. It certainly is not. Also technically the Droid 2 and X don't officially have blur (at least motorola doesn't call it that) and I happen to love the skin on the D2 and DX. From what I've seen, which is very little, this version of blur is not like what's on other devices.

That being said I'll definitely say I prefer most skins/vanilla droid over sense.

Hmm, I thought my one buddy told me he turned his Sense off on his DInc and only ran stock Android before...what a liar lol

Also I read that The Bionic will have an updated Blur that is different then the Blur on the Atrix. it is suppose to be less Blur-less...

I don't care what skin you ship it with... just dont lock the bootloader.
I dont understand why this is so hard to understand for Motorola...
Its MY phone, let me do what I want with it

Would you buy a car that had a locked hood so you couldn't open it? What if you wanted to change your own oil instead of paying someone else to do it? "Sorry we locked the hood to protect you from yourself."

Would you buy a computer that you couldn't reinstall windows or upgrade to the newest version until Dell/HP/Acer/Toshiba got around to it?

Or how about if they decided you couldn't install the newest version because your computer is to old... not because its not powerful enough to run it... but simply its because its 2 years old? "Sorry we no longer want you to install any updates so your forced to buy a new one"

Motorola and Verizon do not care what you do with your phone but when you mess with their money then they have a problem.. Yes it is your phone but when you get free WIFI that is a problem to them that is why they lock it and I read somewhere that HTC locks there boot loader also... It is a money issue...

1. Locked bootloaders have nothing to do with getting free WiFi
2. HTC employs a different level of security designed to discourage root, they don't lock the bootlader

What does HTC use? How does it limit your ability to use rooted apps etc...?

Oh okay Thank You for clearing that up for me...
Excuse my brevity. I wasn't trying to be rude. Tech blogs write headlines and sceam LOCKED BOOTLOADER but never bother explaining exactly what it prevents. People naturally get the idea that you can't root your phone or run root related hacks/modifications.

Hence, my signature.

I likemoto products so blur I don't mind plus the reports are saying that the bionics blur is actually nice and useful

On another note I do everything on my droid x that I did with my rooted OG droid I just don't think its a big difference everyone complains but you still get roms you still get over clock still get themes so in my opinion its not a big deal plus HTC is alright but there build is one I do not like I think overall moto has a better build quality
