I know 4.4.2 is available as an OTA update, but does anyone know what I would get if I bought a new phone today? I would like to root the phone, so if it came stock with 4.4 and I could root it before accepting the update, that would be nice. Obviously, if it came with 4.4.2 pre-installed I would be SOL.

Mine came with 4.4.2. Got it 1 week ago. Motomaker edition, brand new.

If 4.4, and rooting is that important... try and get a Developer Edition X. I know getting the "2yr upgrade price" on the Moto Maker, and the ability to change its look might be desirable... but you can definitely unlock the bootloader (without voiding the warranty!!) and root the Dev Edition, no matter what rom comes out and without having to wait on vulnerabilities to be found and exploited..

If you can't afford the full price of the Dev Edition, consider selling your moto maker to earn some money towards the cost of the Dev X. There are many on Swappa or Craigslist selling theirs for close to the price of the Dev Edition.

Other option is look at the Chinese Middleman thread on XDA for unlocking the bootloader.. Its not as reliable these days, voids your warranty, and since the code is unique per phone, if you ever need a new phone, you'd need to buy a new code.
