What Happened to Other Input Modes?

I need to send text messages in Russian. Got the Cyrillic keyboard, type Russian, but the recipients only see ?????? Research on the problem provides the same answer: change input mode to "automatic". However, my new Samsung Galaxy S II only provides new options for input modes: 1. Samsung Keyboard 2. Swype. How do I find the "automatic" mode option?

Is it possible that your recipients do not have the necessary language pack?
