What is the best Rom out currently?

When using a ROM like Crossbreed v3, which doesn't include the 4.0.4 radios, or Codename, which needs to have GApps flashed separately, are those intended to be flashed on top of the ROM itself, and flashed in the same manner?

Sorry, the more I read the more questions I have regarding the details. I mentioned that I like to know everything, and have several backup plans ahead of time.

Unless stated otherwise--radios are separate from the rom. From my practices, it doesn't matter what order they're flashed in. You can do rom first, radios first, etc.

For GAPPS, you flash the rom first, gapps second.

Thanks! I think I got from a YouTube review that the radios and bootloader for Crossbreed are flashed first with ClockworkMod, followed by the ROM, and for Codename the ROM is flashed first, followed by GApps.

So I think you're correct in that it probably doesn't matter. What's the worst that can happen? If it doesn't work one way, you start over and do it the other way?

I flashed them afterwards, but if the video says go first, then do it first. I'm no expert, although it worked for me ;). I've updated the Crossbreed thread accordingly, because I did see on RW to do the get ready package (i.e. the radios) first. But b/c they're "backwards compatible..." eh, nm. Just do the radios first lol

Well, all of a sudden we have Crossbreed v5, which he says has the leaked 4.0.4 as the base, but also says if you don't have that update to flash the GetReady Package. ??? It's a little confusing, not having done it before. I'm going to be unlocking and then rooting the phone, and immediately flashing this ROM. But first, I'm going to flash the GetReady Package? If my phone will be wiped after unlocking/rooting, what am I flashing the package to?

The direct download does not have the radios or 4.0.4 bootloader. The Get Ready Package does. If you want those (which I suggest, because they are better), then flash the Get Ready package first.

So here's what you need to do:

(1) Unlock
(2) Root
(3) Make sure you have Rom Manager and Clockwork Mod Recovery and all that jazz; follow the guides here
(3) Then go to the Crossbreed thread here and follow the instructions.

Do your unlocking and rooting as soon as you can, cos EVERYTHING will be gone, including stuff on your internal sd card, like your photos and stuff. Back up to your comp then transfer back after unlocking.

The get ready package is the 404 bootloader and radios which you need to have to run a 404 based rom. They are backwards compatible so you can still go back to 403 is need be.

edit: ahh ninja'ed :O

And by 4.0.3 you mean 4.0.2 ;). I haven't seen many--if any--roms that use the 4.0.3 radios. Usually they're a separate bag. I'm sure they're out there though.

Just remember--radios are SEPARATE from the rom, UNLESS stated.

I have a "noob" guide to flashing. I'll PM it to you ;).

Edit: stacman, check your PMs!

I think one of the problems is that I'm reading too much. There's so much information in so many different places, it's hard to keep them straight. Some conflict, but most don't. As with most things I take an interest in, I won't let it rest until I know everything about it. :( As with my Harley, I bought it only knowing how to ride and dress cool, now I can take it all apart and put it back together. :)

No worries; I'm exactly the same way, hence I like writing stuff up because it lets me learn along the way.

A lot of this is trial and error, with the latter making you much better at doing it the next time ;).

Read my guide. The basics are simply--make sure you have the required recovery (CWM, and as davey said, the Touch version is preferable), make sure you ALWAYS wipe, and make sure to follow the instructions in the rom's specific thread. I gave basic instructions for different things, but different roms do things differently.

So reading is a natural prerequisite ;)

stac:

I strongly suggest you getting one of the 2 touch based cwm's we have. They work a little differently from one another, but are equally good. The stock cwm is hard to use and read. Just a heads up.

dm: Meant 403 roms...the 404 radio/bootloaders work on 403 roms :)

Good call; the volume rocker is so wonky in the regular recovery. Would take minutes to try and select the correct prompt lol.

And yes, thankfully. Bootloaders and radios are generally (usually lol) backwards compatible. I dunno where I'd be without my 4.0.4 radios. Living w/ the 4.0.2 radios for a few days reminded me of how bad they were.

I love how we are ganging up to help this guy! hahah

stac...you get stuck along the way or got another question just ask.

Work a lot better too.
