What is the best Rom out currently?

Are we getting way off topic here?

Hey zero, since you're the advisor...why don't you make a thread where us crackflashers can shoot the breeze about all the goings on in this beautiful GN rom world, where no post is off topic.

Brilliant idea.

Speaking of best ROMs, V3 will be the first rom on my just unlocked/unrooted second device lol

Speaking of ROMs, I do have a quick question. When flashing a ROM for the first time with ROM Manager you make a backup of the original image. Where is that image stored? Does it go to the root of the SD Card so it can be retrieved and stored off the phone?

When you make a backup (nandroid) with rom manager or directly in clockworkmod recovery, it backs up to your sd card - it should be located in sd card - rom manager - backups or something like that.
that way when you wipe your phone to flash a rom, the backups remain safe in sd storage.

It goes to the SDcard, but it can also be moved and placed back on the SDcard at any time. I have a bunch of Nandroids just sitting on my Mac, waiting for Glory :/

Great, thanks!

Yup. My rule of thumb is this:

When you download a rom, do it through your computer or be sure to copy it to a computer. I have identical folders on my SD and my Mac: ROMS & GAPPS, CM Nightlies, Nandroids, Radios, Kernels. I make sure each is the same, and while moving stuff around can be a pain, it pays DIVIDENDS if you're like me and needing to get replacements. Unlock/root, get it set up, flash a favorite Nandroid/ROM, profit.

After having lost a couple 1TB HDD's I'm getting a little paranoid. The hardware might have 3-5 year warranties, but nothing for the data you lose. So I went and got a blu-ray burner to backup some of the other 8TBs of storage. I don't see where the Nexus and KindleFire are any different. If I further customize a ROM through my setup preferences I want it backed up somewhere other than the phone. :D

Yup. And if you have the space, storing it in the cloud isn't a bad idea either. I don't have that type of DB space to use, but if I did, you better believe I'd have at least my latest ROM and Nandroid up there waiting.

You have to remember that the most common area of "screwing up" involves three interrelated things (IMO): (1) not wiping (may it be data, cache, dalvik, whatever); (2) not having the correct files (i.e. a wrong GAPPS file), and (3) not having a backup plan. Why people insist on spamming threads on here, RW, and XDA with "omg it screwed up and bricked" when they didn't do any of the above is beyond me.

These things aren't toys; they're expensive pieces of technology that must be cared for like a small, weak puppy. When you're careless, you're going to screw up and end up costing yourself hundreds if not thousands of dollars to correct such a mistake.

It's common for me to have multiple backup plans.

You mentioned wiping. I know that initial unlocking wipes everything, but does Wug's utility have a pre-flash wiping function, and are you wiping everything (including the SD Card) or just the phone's OS? I was looking at the Crossbreed v3 ROM last night, and it said to be sure to wipe everything.

I'm a little new to this part and sometimes it's hard to read between the lines in order not to screw up. For instance, Crossbreed v3 does not include the 4.0.4 radios or the bootloader, so they have to be loaded seperately (they're provided in the link), but which is applied first?

Here's what I do. I'm completely unsure what Wug's wipes out in that function; when I say wipe, I mean booting into recovery (CWM), and two options present itself:

(1) Wiping DATA (factory reset), which wipes out your apps/app data but your "SDcard" remains intact (that only gets wiped when you're unlocking the bootloader or using Wug's tool to "re-root" and "re-lock").

(2) Wiping CACHE and DALVIK CACHE (which is found under the "Advanced" options in CWM recovery).

So when DT says wipe everything, that means DATA, CACHE, and DALVIK CACHE.

For me, I wipe RELIGIOUSLY. Cache/dalvik are wiped every time I flash. For nightly rom builds (see the CM9 thread I'm maintaining), if the builds are "big" builds with differences, I wipe everything. If they are incremental builds with (1) no new GAPPS and (2) no real "framework" changes, I simply wipe cache/dalvik.

Also, some people don't do this, but I always reflash GAPPS. It's cleaner IMO and it prevents problems (like the 2 Galleries issue with the CM9 nightlies).

Hope that helps :D.

It did help very much, thank you.

I apologize to everyone else following this thread for taking it off topic a little bit. It was kinda related in a roundabout way, but some of the finer details are hard to find when you're trying to catch up. I'm a quick learner though, so I'll get there before you know it. Thanks again! ;)

feel free to ask questions - and for detailed directions check out CyberWarrior's thread stickied in the hacks forum - [guide]how to make backups and flash roms

Yup. And a few of us are here religiously and are happy to help. I take pride in knowing nothing, so all of my advice is very basic and to the point.

I'm on my way there now.

I certainly appreciate the help.

Okay, here's a question that complies with the topic.

Is there a decent ROM available that includes tethering? Although, I am curious that even if you could access it, surely Verizon can detect it if for some reason they're monitoring the bandwidth you're using, no?

I am unsure about how verizon monitors the wireless tethering, I wirelessly tether and do not pay for it and have never had any problems though. I sideloaded the app and it works great. Currently, I am unaware of any Roms that include wireless tethering though. I have used Gummynex and am currently using AOKP and can tell you that they do not. But if you are looking to get it just search it on your browser from your phone and download it. (You will have to allow downloads from non-market sources in your settings to do this)

You can tether using the native app for free with AOKP.

The other roms i'm less sure of, but i think you can use the native tethering app for free on those as well.

Go to settings and configure the password for tethering, then turn it on.

You dont need to download a third party app but you can if you want to.

Codename also has it's own free tethering that works great. It's supposed to be undetectable. Honestly, if you intend to use your tethering as a frequent internet feed to watch a bunch of netflix or porn videos on your pc, you probably stand a decent chance of getting busted. If you use it every once in a while, like if your on the road and need to do some pc work for a bit, or your kid needs an internet connection for some homework, you should be fine. Like everything else in life, OK in moderation.

:D There's plenty of time for that at home. Just for emergencies mostly, or for those occasions on travel when the hotel offers free wireless, but no routers or access points near your room.
