What is the best Rom out currently?

These are .img files. Do they need to be flashed?

Yes, but using fastboot.

If you don't want to deal with that (and it's a pain and I only know enough to be dangerous), you can donate in Rom Manager ($2) for it to autoflash.

I actually planned on doing this tonight, but I couldn't even get the USB drivers to install, so I'm putting it off for a while.

I had some issues with the drivers because I made the mistake of running it on an XP machine. I ran it on the Win 7 machime this morning and the issues were fewer.

I remember when I rooted the KindleFire that there was an app you could run to verify that the device is rooted. Anyone remember the name? Google isn't helping this time.

To check if you have root - download superuser app (or just make sure it's in your app drawer), then try to grant superuser access to a root-only app, such as rom manager, TiB, etc ..

Not sure if htere is an app that will just check it for you, never used one of those.

They accept superuser permissions and I installed Root Explorer and that worked as well, so it looks like it. I guess the true test will be when I attempt to flash a new ROM. I tried flashing the ClockWorkMod Touch with fastboot, but it didn't like the command in command line. Is there another way to flash the image?

the touch version or regular rom manager?

Regular rom manager app will flash recovery for you.
Same with the paid-touch version of rom manager - and the same with (thru rom manager) the touch version taht's built in.

The free way with that requires adb push - pretty sure that's the only way to get koush's touch recovery without paying for it in teh rom manager app.

Not sure tho - maybe someone can chime in about that.

I did flash the Crossbreed v7 ROM. When I go to flash another ROM and make a backup of this, are the settings and customizations, and apps retained in the backup?

There are so many settings in this, I'd hate to have to do this more than once if I were to decide to come back to it.

Why would you want to go to anything else? Jk but this is one seriously bada$ rom.
But yes, your settings will remain in the backup.
You may be turning into a flashaholic. :)

I see that happening, probably very soon. Especially if I can't find where those screenshots came from in the rootzwiki post. Mine looks nothing like that. I don't see any of the custom menus. Then again, I haven't explored all the settings yet. I'll do that at the office tomorrow.

Stac,
For installing the cwm img file, I'm assuming you have the android sdk all setup on your comp and you maybe typed the wrong command. Should be
fastboot flash recovery exactfilename.img
You should copy and paste the filename to avoid typos.

I did do the copy/paste for the file name, but it gave me a message of why it couldn't complete it. I'll have to run it again to find out.

I'm on Codename 1.4 and haven't seen a need to make the change to 1.5 or any other rom. Can anyone give a clear explanation as to if there is another rom that noticeably runs better? I'm also running Franco's kernel and should note that I am not addicted to flashing roms on a daily basis (seems that some roms have been going through a lot of new versions lately).

Thanks

Codename was my first choice, but heard Crossbreed was a good one, so it got first try. It has gone from V2 to V7 in three days, so I was a little apprehensive. V7 was released in a STD and SHO version. STD is supposed to be a slower runner, but still has the Franco kernel (which I've heard good things about), but the SHO version switched to a Trinity kernel. I may jump over to Codename before long just to compare.

Running V7 w/ SHO, love it. Had an issue with a poorly installed backup app (Chrome, conveniently), but past that, amazing yet again.

I use AOKP Milestone 4 with Franco Milestone 1. Runs great and has plenty of customization. The developer is great

Crossbreed is the best by far for stability, speed, battery life and goodies.

I recently unlocked my bootloader and rooted for stock 4.0.4 but when it comes to all those roms I feel like I live in some cave. That rom looks awesome but there are so many out idk which is best. Can someone advise me on which one to get, and how to install it on my device. Would be greatly appreciated.

For me, it's Codename Android. It's the most stable, no need to constantly flash new versions, great battery life and customization options. Yet to see a rom that offers anything better.
