Messenger. It's simple and clean and hopefully it stays that way. Don't need most of the fancy bells and whistles the other apps have. My fallback is Hangouts if there is wifi but no cell coverage.

I'd use messenger or hangouts if it worked properly with T-Mobile, but it doesn't, so I use Textra which is flawless for me.

I use Google Messenger, although I did use Hangouts for awhile before. I found Hangouts a bit sluggish. Although, to be fair, it was on my previous phone, a Moto X 2013, which was quite long in the tooth.
