I dropped my phone from about chest height and I think I broke my LCD. Purple/green lines appeared near the bottom with the rest of the screen displaying dimly. My sound/touchscreen works fine and I can barely make out the contents of the screen, but just barely so. Also, there are no visible cracks on the screen. I'm pretty sure my insurance ran out so I was looking at some alternative ways that I might be able to fix it. Anyone know exactly what part of my phone is broken?

Welcome to Android Central! It sounds like the LCD. If it still registers touches, then the digitizer sounds like it's intact. Bring it to a repair shop and get an estimate.

You can replace the complete screen assembly yourself but the display is probably the most expensive component in the device: around $130 new, but you can probably find it cheaper used.

You may want to consider investing those funds in a replacement phone - you can probably still get the original Moto X or Moto G off contract for around $250.
