What settings to enhance battery?

well, after some good advice here and some additional tweaking i am happy to report i got about 13 hours out of my phone today! thank you to everyone who helped with this- was very frustrating getting 7-8 hours when i was reading about others getting at least 12.

thanks again!

what changes did you make, and what settings are you using now?

My phone took about 10 1/4 hours to drain completely flat where the phone shut itself off.

Just an FYI, was talking with a tech at a Sprint store today about the EVO 3D, comparing it with NS4G. He said biggest differences were battery life as bad or worse than the HTC Thunderbolt, more bloatware than original EVO had on it, only about 1 gig out of 4 gig internal memory left for users to store apps on, comes with Android 2.3.3, will not get 2.3.4 till sometime 2012, still has Qik for video conferencing, Blockbuster, and lots of other crap. I never planned on getting it, but since we are talking about battery life, thought I would mention it here. Also, it has same signal problems as NS4G, but worse, antenna is poorer quality than NS4G - NS4G signal problems due to software bug, same as volume issue. Both due to be fixed with OTA update sometime soon (hinted at couple weeks or so). Tech not sure if HTC will fix the antenna issue before release.

Hello,

I am a brand new Nexus user. (Just got it yesterday).
And this thread caught my attention. Great information for a new user by the way.
I was wondering about the battery usage.
Mine says that 46% is for Cell Standby. Is this normal.

I'm wanting to make sure that I get the battery "broken in" properly, so to speak.

what changes did you make, and what settings are you using now?

i uninstalled the following:
noled
sensorly
il meteo
shopper

made the following app changes:
i shut down latitude
fancy widget weather - i unchecked 'use my location'
GO SMS - changed to lite and disconnected FB (don't use it but just in case)
news/weather - auto reset off
smooth calendar - changed to update every hour

screen is at 15s and auto - but it was this setting before too
email - 1 account at 30 minute and one at 1 hour.
BT - i toggle when i need it.
4g haven't used much
wifi at home

i realize the way i did it above i can't pin down the problem but i was so anxious to get a good day out of it i took the shot gun approach. now i'll start tweaking and adding things back to see if i maintain about 12 hours.

hope that helps

Thanks for the info. I really like everything about this phone, except for the external sound and wifi/cell issues. If these can be fixed by an OTA software update, I will be completely happy.

(I used to be upset about no notification light, but after finding and using noLED, I actually would have a hard time going back to a basic light)

Like a Sprint Store tech/rep has had that much, sorry, any hands on time with the EVO 3D. You'll find any leaks of info on here way before Sprint reps know anything, should be common knowledge by now for all of us.

For those who are having crappy battery life (I'm down to 50% in under 4 hours), has anyone just tried a new battery? Or could it be a hardware issue?

And just wanted to add... when I check the battery settings, the display claims 48% of the battery life. Is that normal???

Had my phone since debut, today it got a true workout. Had a lot of talk time, had to take a few pics to send gmail, sent/received gmail and received/sent texts. For today, my system has used:
voice calls 52%
Google Voice 17%
Display 13%
Cell Standby 6%
Android system 5%
Google Services 4%
Phone idle 3%
Android OS 2%
gmail 2%

Running applications: Settings, android sprintme..,Google Voice, Google Services and Android keyboard.
Right now battery life at 19% Running time on battery: 12 hours

One thing I've noticed is that you have to watch Google Voice, I've sent some videos didn't go through until hours later, but GV was eating battery. Sending/receiving a pic could do it, even texting can cause it to use too many resources.
What I've done, right or wrong, is to watch the battery usage especially after the above named tasks. If GV starts increasing I go to manage applications and force quit GV. Had it using over 70% the other day until I caught it, next day GV was using 2%.
I've only added a couple of apps, nothing that runs continually to save battery and the fact that I'm on the fence so far...but leaning towards keeping it. I knew of the issues before I bought it, kinda surprised I'm having them, but updates will hopefully be quick to come.

check latitude - was set to always be visible - i disabled that and i'm getting better battery

Besides display everything else is negligible... And I've had my brightness set to Auto, but same thing: Display - 49% Faulty hardware?

The screen is expected to be one of the major power drains on your phone 30-40% is usually what I get on my phone. The other major source of battery drain are the radios 4G > 3G > wifi. That is why is smart to pay attention which apps are doing background sync (like Latitude) and take control of the schedule if possible. If you live in an area of fringe signal this is made worse by the radio constantly "hunting" for a signal; this can really become a battery killer.

I recently turned on the backup settings on the private menu to see how this impacts my battery life. I suspect this may be responsible for some of the issues some of you have. With it off, I have easily gotten over 12 hr of normal use with some battery life left before putting it back on the charger. Will see if this has a significant impact on my battery life and will post.

I strongly suspect the erratic radio signal reception experienced by many on this phone is perhaps the major culprit of poor battery life. As I was reading on a post from a Nexus One user, this seems to be a problem in Gingerbread itself as it happened to his phone right after the update. Will see.
