what version should my android be?

im using the e4gt and running android 2.3 should it be at 3.1 or whatever it is(not 100% sure of the android versions)? a coworker and my friend both say they are updated past that and have a lockscreen that is like a puzzle piece so im severely confused. they both have the e4gt.
if i am suppose to be updated past 2.3 how do i do it?
my apologies i am slightly a noob to the rooting/rom/official update thing so treat me like the baby i am haha.

2.3.6 is the last official update. We'll be on 4.x when it's officially released (likely 4.4).
