Fellas,
Let me put some of this to sleep.
As a Sprint Technician I can safely say, and with most corresponding emails, internal docs, and a few upcoming conferance webcasts this month and next
that Apple and Sprint have not reached any agreements whatsoever to carry the iPhone on our network.
In fact, whatever we are unveiling next month is to help us get business in the door over the CDMA iPhone because we aren't carrying it.
Not only that, but these goals seem long term as well, possibly because Apple simply does not want to make a 3rd version (or 2nd when they move to the new circuit boards that support the new qualcomm hybrid GSM/CDMA chips that both AT&T and Verizon iPhone5 will be handling) because again...we are apparantly not in talks to carry any version of the iPhone.
Another slap in the face (or clue) as to us possibly partnering more with Android now than anything since we are not getting an iPhone is that our once partner Palm is about to launch some devices, and the leaks are now coming out about those devices, and they are both for Verizon and AT&T with no Sprint 3g or 4g options being leaked. That tells me that our bridges were possibly burned from one side or the other with Palm/HP...otherwise why would Sprint not get a WebOS device since it was launched on our network to begin with?
The EVO line is basically the Droid line for Sprint...I see it progressing on, possibly with the Feb 7th announcement. I also predict (this is not from any inside info I know of, just a personal feeling) that Clear is in REAL trouble right now...either Sprint watches them crash and burn and we lose our 4G service altogether (which would kill us IMHO), or we see them buckle under, and pick up the equipment in liquidation, move it to our network towers, and in the process firmware update those suckers to LTE, so that when Apple Comes around next year or the year after with CDMA/LTE iPhone 6 or 7, we have moved into a position Apple see's better for them to offer it at that point.
Upgrading to WiMax 2 keeps us out of the iPhone future roll outs as well, as I just don't see Apple jumping on the Wimax bandwagon.
Again, that last part of my statement is all speculation by me, no way is this what Sprint is thinking, just my crappy business sense trying to wake up for a moment of clarity, if it was the way I'd see it go down...but I'm around 99.9999% sure we aren't carrying or testing iPhone equipment on any part of our network. In fact, I think we are kinda bummed and are now trying to take measures in saving face that we aren't in line next to get it, so we are carrying on stronger with our Google, Android, and HTC partnerships instead.
One thing I am personally thinking for sure though is...Verizon's Droid Push is about to get quieter and quieter, think guitar amp terms, they are at an 11 now...I'm thinking the dial goes to around 3 or 4 because John Q public is still mostly on the iPhone camp. We've certainly picked up our share of Android on them, but that could be more due to availability on people's personally favorite carriers more than anything, again, I could be wrong.
Anyway my .01 cent..probably not worth much, but it sure sounds like we are kinda bummed we aren't getting an iPhone too, so we are making sure our strengths are known as a combatative and competitive way of saying...hey, no iPhone, but we are still in there...check out or Android EVO stuffs.
I'm an android guy through and through, this platform is where I'd always hoped windows mobile would go, but instead they stagnated and then decided to turn face and do the WP7 thing instead.
Once again folks, my comments are just that, mostly my opinion, take them all with a grain of salt, I only work at the company as a tech and have only been around 6 yrs, some would consider that still being a newbie (even though I now have 16 yrs in the business from various other carriers including former GTE which is now Verizon).
Nite and thanks for letting me spew forth some drivel.
