What's Motorola's update rate look like with VZW?

For those that have come from the previous generation RAZR and other Droid phones, how many official updates did you folks receive? Did you get any bug fixes or updates in the first 3-6 months of ownership (short of the 1 you usually get on unboxing)?

You will see maybe one or two updates in the next 12-18 months. Maybe an upgrade to 4.3 but that will be way after KLP is released.

Keep in mind that the experience with a moto phone now may be notably different than it was a couple years ago. Different owners (Google), and different phone software. Less skinning & bloatware means less testing and updating of software to make sure an Android update rollout is ready to go.

In other words, only time will tell, but there is reason to think it could be different than in the past.

rumor mill is saying the moto x is getting 4.3 on sept 4. I have to say with the last 4 phones being released having the same exact hardware and OS except for the verizon bloat on the mini, ultra and maxx they are the same. I would hope that updates would come much quicker this time around if not then Moto and Verizon are on track for an epic fail again.

Unfortunately, the common denominator right now is Verizon, which has traditionally been the limiting factor. Unless Google and Motorola have finally struck a deal similar to Apple. Unlikely but ever hopeful.

And maybe this Voda breakup announced today might be good for us as well.

The HTC One on VZW is a good reminder of this. I mean, 6 months to get the thing released on their network? Wow. I know that it dropped with 4.2.2, but still. That was a LOT of testing on the part of Verizon.

Are technica has a good article on why os updates are mattering less and less for Android. Google is putting more updates through Google Play services which can't be blocked by OEM's.

They can't push an OS version upgrade through Play Services.

The sooner we can get 4.3's TRIM support, the better, but fur that we're at Verizon's mercy.

All Motorola phones on Verizon since (and including) the DROID Bionic are running Jelly Bean.

If they want to skip over 4.3 and go right to 4.4 that's ok by me. My phone is running fine on 4.2.2. Two weeks uptime and counting.

Agreed, give me some of that Kit Kat goodness.

We already have TRIM. Moto used F2FS on /data for all the new droids and the moto x. It does trim on delete.

The point of the article is that having the latest os number is mattering less.

Could you point me to where that's documented?

(I'm curious, not calling you out on it)

Whatever the exact answer is I hope it's soon. I have a couple of annoying software bugs that need fixing, like the touch buttons don't turn off in daydream mode and Assist doesn't work right for texts, only calls.

Have you tried turning the screen off then back on and leaving it on the lock screen before daydream starts? That dims the buttons for me.

I posted in another thread the update schedule for the RAZR. It had 3 updates within the first 6 months and is currently running 4.1.2.

If you have specific issues/feature requests, you should check out the motorola forum as the mod over there seems to relay certain problems/feature requests back to the team.

Brian Klug mentions it in the Moto X review on Anandtech.

I was excited seeing that in the Moto X review, just curious if it's 100% known that the same f2fs thing applies to the new DROIDs as well (I only saw the X referred to in that review, maybe I'm missing a spot in it?)
