what's this thing look like now?

I would check your math unless I cant think strait this morning.

I think your 4.6% change is based upon the diagonal measurement only. Since the screen is in 2 dimensions wouldn't the size difference be something like 4.6%^2 or a change in size of about a 21% increase?

That seems significant to me...
It's about a 9.5% increase assuming a 16:9 screen ratio. 7.9 in^2 to 8.65in^2

Yeah I'm no mathematician.. but it would be a 4.6% increase to each angle which overall would be a 21% increase towards each corner. But that 21% is stretched across the plane of the screen, so literally 21% would appear about 1/8th of an inch more in length and width over a 4.3 " screen. Which would easily fit on say a Droid X unless they keep the same distance from the edge in which case this phone will be 1/8 of an Inch wider and taller.

Though from the latest leak I feel it may be 4.3" I mean the Droid X2 already has the rumored screen... but hey whatever right? my opinion is it's not a big deal... it's already a big phone.. haha

Let me apologize in advance for stirring this pot, but I'm curious and may have missed something along the way.

Has there been any info about whether or not this will have the dreaded (gulp) pentile display?

I bet it's PenTile.. Which sucks.. I haven't seen a PenTile up close yet but from all the reviews it's pretty much deemed the Satan child of cell phone screens. Some can't even claim it's actually HD.. it's just a poorly made screen :\ But something I bet we'll have to deal with come the Bionic :\

And people wonder why Android users get labeled as spec-whores…

I’d suggest taking other people’s comments in stride until you decide for yourself.

I haven’t really examined these “dreaded pentile” screens closely either, but I can say that the last time I browsed the ol’ phone store two or three weeks back I didn’t see any phones with screens that I would classify as even close to “sucks.” Some are better than others, but they are all really good now-a-days.

Hardly poorly made, just a different tech. I personally will gladly trade some 'detail' on blocks of solid colors for a screen that is easier to read outdoors.

And some people don't like the cartoonish over saturated colors of SA+ screens even though it is considered the next coming by most reviewers out there.

The tech is a great concept but the output, in my opinion, is a less than marginal success for my uses needed by a smartphone. That's all. In no way am I boycotting the Bionic because it has a PenTile screen, I was just stating the general consensus of reviews online and explaining that this is probably our next screen.

I also didn't mean it was poorly manufactured, Pentile works as intended, it's poorly made towards my needs, but I can understand, Moto cannot make everyone happy and I'm prepared to deal with that reality. in short 'It sucks.' :p (but I'm still happy)

From Engadget: ...big, bright 4.3-inch LCD up front that's moved up to qHD since the X -- an impressive 960 x 540 resolution. Viewing angles are extremely good as is contrast, making this one of the best displays we've yet seen on a handset. It doesn't quite have that look of the Super AMOLED Plus displays Samsung has been packing on phones like the Galaxy S II or the Infuse 4G, but its brightness, contrast, color reproduction, and most importantly resolution make it a very strong contender.

From bgr: The resolution is there, but unfortunately the screen looks pixelated to me despite bumping up the original model?s 480 x 854-pixel resolution to 540 x 960. Colors, however, are accurately displayed and the qHD screen on the Motorola DROID X2 is bright and vivid. The resolution is close to the Retina Display on the iPhone 4, and while that looks great on paper, once you?ve compared the two, well, there isn?t a comparison. Outdoor readability was very good on the DROID X2′s display, though, and the 4.3-inch screen is great for web browsing and multimedia.

From phonearena: Nonetheless, it offers sharp looking visuals that pack plenty of detail and higher pixel density, while producing some natural looking colors. In addition, its high-contrast look enables us to use it outdoors under direct sunlight with no visibility issues whatsoever. Lastly, its good viewings angles doesn?t fade, distort, or wash out colors ? thus, keeping it consistent looking at all angles.

Infosyncworld offers no negatives about the screen of the phone i can see and rate it a 95%, one of the top phones if not the top phone right now.

Also note that i've read that bgr is apple biased but still praise the phone. I have seen it in person and compared to a Charge, which i use right now and pentile is fine to me.

Nope, Educated Guess says that It Will have Pentile though. As you know I for One am more than Fine with Pentile Display, but I know many who say they are not (hell I even think a few of the people that claim to hate pentile, have actually seen it in person.) :-[

I had a charge and that was one of the things I couldn't stand was the overexaggerated colors. I would rather have natural colors than overblown colors. Screen was nice for surfing and watching movies but when it came to pictures and such (I take alot) it wasn't all that it was cracked up to be.

I'm not going to battle this with a barrage of negative reviews on the pentile screen and detract from the topic. If you want the win it's yours :p. The pentile is a fine and dandy screen and I can't wait to slather my greasy fingers all over it.

I don't know where all these negative reviews are coming from as bgr, infosyncworld, phonearena and engadget are pretty much the sites for the reviews. Anyways, it wasn't my intentions to start a battle. :p

All but one of those was positive so why do you say they are all negative? Lots of people seem to hate the screens I saw no issue when iI looked and after all I'm the one making the decision not some online review.

For the folks who dislike the over-saturated look of the SAMOLED+ display, the GS2 supposedly has settings that let you dial the saturation down if you want. (according to a poster in the GS2 Function forum) If that's true, problem solved.

Now if only the Bionic would let you dial down the blocky pixelation... :p

Not really interested in the GS2 so really a non issue for me.

and boooooo poor form for trying to sling a pentile jab and fire up that arguement again. *looks around for CK*

Well, just for clarity, I'm prefectly fine with someone coming in and calling a phone's screen utter-carp, but at least wait until you've seen it.

it's the "well I heard it was this and therefore its crap" that makes the world of Android annoying to wade through sometimes.

While we're on the subject, obviously if the GPU doesn't run at 384Mhz then it will be a slow, stuttering mess... :'(

Its not quad core so its garbage. /s There are enough haters and the phone isn't even out yet lol. I don't understand why people get so worked up over a phone.

It doesn't effect me either way. I passed on this phone a while back. Interesting to see both camps though. Whatever works is what i say. If one is or isn't bothered, thats their choice. I understand the disdain for it though :)
