What's up with the mediocre reviews for the G2?

I trust the reviews of people who come from apple, because I'm still waiting for the open, custom android experience that can be as snappy, clean, and to the point as iOS.

4+ years with ios and 11 days with the g2. Just as you said, crisp as iPhone with a lot more freedom. Very pleased

Yet another lame review that can't shift it's focus away from the rear button. Of course most everything else about the phone they like that most people care about..battery, power of CPU etc. But they just can't get past the back button. The button placement has been a non-issue for me since pretty much day one.

Another annoying thing about the inept reviewer is he didn't do much homework. He says "The phone has a pair of excellent-sounding stereo speakers"...Uhhhh, no it doesn't sir, it has ONE speaker. I'd love to post that on his review, but I don't belong to any of their usual ways of communicating...Twitter etc.

To bad so many reviewers slam the phone after using it for maybe an hour for their reviews.

That was a pathetic review. Never mind the factual errors, but if you don't particularly like the rear button placement then just say it's not your preference. It's completely subjective.

The G2 is a spectacular phone. My only complaint is the cramped notification shade.

Not that I'm defending him but all variants have two speakers on the bottom except the Verizon version and looking at the picture he didn't have the Verizon version.

I will now explain to everyone why Ed Baig writes a review like that on a great phone like the G2. Mr. Baig is the co-author of a book on the 'ins & outs' of...get ready for it...the Apple Iphone! Well who'da thunk????

I only found out about that recently after reading one of his glowing, salivating reviews on the latest Iphone. At the end of the review was this little asterisk that said something to the effect of 'in the interest of honesty, Mr. Baig is the co-author of a book on the IPhone'. I then thought back to all the reviews I've read from this guy on a myriad of smartphones. I always thought "wow, this guy only salivates over Iphones and finds fatal flaws with every other phone in existence other than an IPhone". I thought he was just an IRobot until I read that little disclaimer. It all instantly became crystal clear.

So keep that in mind the next time you see one of his 'reviews'.

Nope. None of the iterations of the G2 have 2 speakers...none. Some have 2 speaker grilles, but all have only one speaker. Mr. Baig didn't bother to do his research because his bread is only buttered by the IPhone.

So there is one speaker that goes the entire length of the bottom of the phone? It can't be like that on Verizon model. I don't see how the speaker can can be behind both grilles.

Edit: I looked it up. Looks like you're right. Its a microphone and not a speaker.

I've seen lots of positive reviews but man oh maaaaan.... Gizmodo haaaates this phone. Such a bizarre review. He just ragged on it the whole time.

I, for one, didn't agree with his opinions.

gizmodo hates on most android phones. i stopped using gizmodo and went to engadget, since gizmodo goes bat**** crazy when an apple product comes along. sure it may be to amuse the masses, but iphone this, ipod that. check out this new technology that apple has come up with this time. so inovating.

It's funny, I was listening to the verge podcast the other day. There was definitely a lot of Android bashing just in a general way. Cracks at how android is so laggy, slimy plastic phones, or whatever. Then they were talking about all the reasons ios7 is messed up. How the iPhone needs bigger screens, bigger batteries etc... Then they talked about great features of the moto x, how android can be more productive etc... Lol both are great systems at this point.

I read a lot of G2 reviews, I like my G2 and think it is hands down the best phone I've owned. Most of us don't get new phones every other week like these reviewers do. Most of us probably use a case so a glossy plastic finish isn't a big deal. I do agree I wish LG would have built upon the build quality of the previous generation but all the components in the G2 are top notch.

It is probably the best screen, camera and possibly battery life of any android phone available, that's pretty damn good. Yes the skin is LGs but it's really not that bad, use a launcher and I basically have the exact setup I had in my Nexus 4 except for on screen button configuration which I actually like better by adding quick memo. I've said it before as long as Samsung makes a menu button android will have one.

I agree. My problem with reviews is they focus on one negative, and really bash it home. Try to find another phone on the market that has the quality screen, maybe the best camera besides the Lumia, processor (its the best), and battery life (only razr maxx and note 3 can compete). When you couple all 4 of those things together, it wins. Some people will complain about the button placement and software, but I actually like both of them.

Best phone i've ever owned.

i thought the USA today review was fair. it gave it props for all of the positives, and rightfully called it out for the rear button design (which I have yet to get used to)

The rear buttons may have been a mistake when it's all said and done, but I like they tried to differentiate themselves from other phones by changing such an important set of buttons.

It's weird for me because they don't bother me at all but I can understand why they bother people. In my review of this phone, I state I use the LG window case and because of it I really never need the power button, with the screen protector part of the case folded behind the phone it feels good to me in hand and I can use the volume buttons or on screen volume notification slider with ease.

I could have missed it, but I don't think anyone really hammered to home how awesome tapping a screen twice to wake is. It's totally revolutionary IMO. That was easily the single best feature of that phone. It worked 90% of the time too.

I'd LOVE to have this feature on my Note 2 as I routinely use it laying on a desk and tapping 2x would be ideal.
