When will Google fix Android's fragmentation?

All Samsung phones are Android, but not all Android phones are Samsung. Even if it were 70%, Samsung isn't Android.
The Nexus 4 sold several million, I don't see why the Nexus 5 wouldn't have either. The Nexus line is gaining popularity. Not being sold on a contract is a good thing...As far as Verizon, that's their fault. You can use it on basically any other carrier in the world.

L is fixing that :p

Give me numbers. What percentage of all Android phones sold are Nexus 5 phones?

The 40% samsung number is available with a simple google search.

I cannot find a number for nexus 5. That tells me it is very very small compared to other handsets sold. It does not even register on the sales charts.

So now Android is copying iOS with the the touch notification on the status bar

Read this paragraph in context of the first paragraph and it makes perfect sense.
I've read the whole thread. It's making less and less sense as it goes on.

Let's say your Nexus 5 is having issues. Where do you take it too to fix this issue. ... People will stop referring all Android phones as O hey is that the galaxy phone.
You take it to wherever you bought it. T-Mobile or the internet probably, in the U.S. Granted, the Nexus line isn't well-known, but I don't think most people confound Samsung and Android. We've been more or less past that since Droid stopped being the main name in Android. All that said, I can certainly see the virtue of having Google/Android stores.

You are telling him to go get a Nexus when it is not sold in any large numbers, is not advertised and is not even sold on Verizon and not sold with a contract.

I know people on Sprint who would point out otherwise.

Am I the only one who isn't even sure what it is we're talking about anymore? I have no idea what the core thread of this discussion is, I'm just taking questions as they come at this point.

I think it went like this:

Person complains about Android fragmentation.
Others point out the problem and offer the solution, as well as point out that this problem is not unique to one OS.
People complain about solutions.
Others point out the problems/solutions/whatever else.

As if there is a magical, perfect ideal that will ever be found.

You are comparing Verizon to a third rate provider like Sprint!!!

Why are you using so many exclamation points? Are you mad or something?

I'm on Verizon, but I'm not an *****. Sprint is a provider that works for some people. Why should anyone be mad if someone chooses Sprint because it works for them?

I recommend that we call that number the spammers have been posting for the past couple days. I have it on good authority that "all problems solutions through the power full astrologer," and they do offer "advice for domestic controversy." They'll probably straighten this right out.

Android is not Google, Android or best known as AOSP (Android Open Source Project) is a open-source OS, like Linus. Google doesn't really have a control over how its used, at all. They can give suggestions to it and of course work on features and stuff, but besides that, any one can take it and do what they want. There is the Open Handset Alliance where Google has more control over what OEMS can do, so they get access to Google Apps.

Like people said above, iOS has its share of fragmentation to. Yes the iPhone 4 or iPad 2 runs "iOS 7" but only a version of it. Google is combating fragmentation, unlike you said, through solutions such as Google Play Services or Apps like Gmail through the Play Store. Google Play Services allows older phones, like someones 1.6 Donut device (Thats what I heard, not sure if it actually goes back that far), to have the most recent features without the silly number. Same with allowing apps to be updated through the Play Store. With these in mind, a OS update is only rather needed for security and changes like design.

I never had a version with Google support really, I had a issue once, got connected to a human pretty quick, and it was probably the greatest CS I had. I never had experience with Apple so I can't compare, though I did see some post of G+ where people were talking about Apples support being not so good. As for physical stores, there is none, well there is a third party one is Australia, and Google is doing a store or something, but your carrier store, best buy, ect all work.

I'm not getting into the whole iOS8 = Android 1.6 or whatever, because its not really true. Some ways yes, but its not a fair comparison.
