When your phone is asleep and you get a text message, does your screen wake up?

I thought my phone had always woke up when I'd get a text, but lately it hasn't been doing that. Am I just remembering wrong, or does everyone else's phone wake up when they get a text?

It can do either depending on the setting you give to it.

mine does, but only when it receives an sms
other apps (such as whatsapp and instagram) don't wake the screen up

Same for S9, the solution is installing a 3-rd party app.

I returned my Note 9 for that reason exactly. The AOD went off, the lockscreen came on everytime I got a notification at night. I need my phone on for emergency purposes as I'm in a health services field. Samsung chat support could not help me figure it out. I went back to the S9+ and have not had the problem. I'm sorry you're going through this, it is harder to isolate than one might expect.
