Might slow down and take another look.
I just tried it again using both the default media selector and ESFile explorer and both worked.
I recommend that you use the default media selector... it has a "Cancel" "OK" after you select and it shows both the system ringtones and those in the storage ringtone folder.
If you use ESFileExplorer, it shows only the tones that are in the storage ringtone folder.
In addition, the default media selector previews each sound as part of the selection process.
