Where are sms messages stored on an S2 ?

I can browse this S2 and view all hidden folders/files, but can't see a file called /data/user/0/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db

Does the S2 have to be rooted ? I'm using Linux and have attached the S2 as a USB device.

If you can see anything in /data/data, it doesn't have to be rooted. If you can't, it does.

As for the filename of the SMS file, Samsung could change that from time to time. In the Note 3, it's in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases, but they could have moved it in the S2. (Since the tablet is multiuser, the /user/0/ would account for that. But it may be in a different folder in there.)
