Where is USB 'ok to disconnect' msg?

I am a newbie to android and on a steep learning curve, so if I'm the only one who doesn't know this - please pardon the ignorance. I've connected my captivate to my PC (for Kies use) twice. The device is recognized fine, Keis works fine (up to its marginal capability). I don't like to disconnect devices unless I get some kind of 'ok to disconnect' indication either on the PC or the device. There doesn't seem to be such an indication on the captivate or the PC. Not via the tray icon or in Kies. The device retains the USB connection icon and running dots on the screen. My questions are:

1) is it ok to manually disconnect the USB anyway, i.e., am I caring about this needlessly?
2) should there be such a message? If so, where is it? :confused

Thanks for any advice on this.

1. I've never had an issue. Just make sure the computer isn't reading/writing to the SD card, close all windows looking at it, any programs looking at any files there.
2. There's a little icon in the lower-right hand corner of your task bar that looks like a plug. It usually gets hidden behind the arrow. Just right-click on it.

As long as data is not being transferred, disconnecting without the prompt is not a problem. I generally ensure nothing is happening and then unplug. Have done it this way for the last 2 or so years.

I have only ever once ran into a problem with this and it was when I was formatting a flash drive. I removed it while it was happening and just had the annoyance of re-reformatting it. Even if you remove while data is being transfered, it just messes up the files that were being moved, not the phone or SD card. Hardware and software nowadays do not really require this to be performed anymore.
