Which Evo should I get?

Hey everyone. Thanks to changes made in the Sprint Premier program, I have to use an upgrade credit by March 31st or I lose it. I'm trying to decide between the Evo and the Evo Shift and would love some feedback from you all. Do you still like your Evo? Do you wish it had a physical keyboard? Is it too big?

A final option would be to wait until December rolls around to upgrade when I get a new upgrade credit. I wanted to upgrade the Nexus S 4G but because it's not officially released yet I can't without paying full price.

So let me know what you think: Evo, Evo Shift, or wait until January.

Thanks!

The Evo is definitely a solid phone. I own it, and am very happy with it. A friend of mine owns the Evo Shift, and I have had the oppurtunity to play with it a little bit. I don't like the Shift quite as much as I like the regular Evo. The size doesn't bother me. I do wish it had a physical slide out keyboard, but it should be vertically sliding, instead of horizontally like the Shift.

If I were you though, I would just wait, unless you have a dinosaur of a phone.

I used to like physical keyboards but after getting the EVO 4G, I don't need it. The EVO 3D is coming out too so maybe Sprint will lower the price of the EVO 4G. I don't know but if you can wait, I would wait in your situation.

Right now I'm using the Hero with CM6, decent phone but well past it's prime. Waiting seems like it would be the best policy in order to get a next gen phone, I just don't know if I can make it until December though.

I agree with @JamesKBoyd, right now it looks like EVO 3D will be coming out this summer.

You have an upgrade, which means that you must have had your device over a year. Therefore NOT upgrading by March 31st would mean the most you would have to wait until being eligible again would be Jan 1st of next year. The question is, how much over your year are you? If you are at 17 or 18 months since upgrading, it might just pay to wait and use that on the EVO 3D.

But, back on topic -- I don't miss a physical kb at all on my EVO. I tried the EVO Shift (and my daughter's Epic) and I just don't like the landscape kb. I came from a Pre and really liked the portrait keyboard there. However, mileage varies by individual. If you are going to upgrade I would spend some time at the Sprint store (or wherever you can get your hands on them) and play!

Also remember, you have 30 days to try it out. If you get the Shift and find out it just doesn't work for you, you can always return it and go with the OG EVO.

I don't know how they had work out your upgrade pricing for December. The upgrade your getting now is $150 I assume, how much would it be in December? If it's the same then you could wait to get the EVO 3D - if not then get the EVO 4G... awesome device and a lot better than what you have now.

PS.
If you pass on the upgrade now, and the $150 credit still stands for December, then you could talk to a supervisor and get the 3D a little later after its launch in the Sumner. I'm sure once you explain your situation to them - they'll work with you. I've had that happen to me before.

Good luck

Take off the briefs and put on the boxer shorts. Get the Manly Device. EVO4G

LoL.... that's rich!!!!

But ya m8... if your going to pull the trigger "now"... get the EVO. My wife has the Shift, she loves it. But for me, after using my EVO and having a lot of time playing around with and setting up her Shift. I have to say the EVO is by far the better device.

Plus the dev community for the EVO is just awesome.

EVO for sure. If you do a comparison of the specs of the two phones the EVO is light years ahead. I came from a Blackberry, then to palm, so I always thought i *had* to have a physical keyboard. Turns out, not so much! You get used to the soft keyboard, plus there's swype, plus the new keyboard in Gingerbread is O U T S T A N D I N G.

Thanks for all the opinions guys, right now you have me swayed towards the Evo. Though this being the forum for Evo owners that's not too surprising.

What I may end up doing is going with the Evo and if find I would still like to have the physical keyboard I'll return it within the 30 day return period for the Shift. Or maybe the Nexus S 4G will get released within that 30 day period and I can snag that.

I have the same history and was heavily into the sliding keyboards, SlideIT and UltraKeyboard usually. Then I tried the Gingerbread keyboard, scoffing at first in its simplicity. 2 months now I keep going back to it no matter what. I can't even comprehend or explain fully why it's so good. Even when I push my typing as fast as I can go it turns out very well... I don't get it. But yeah. It's good.

But to get back on topic... I'd say burn it on a white or black OG EVO through Wirefly, and when your next upgrade is ready, you'll have a lot of solid reviews for the EVO 3D and other phones on Sprint by that time.. I'm eyeing the Kyocera Echo... goofy as it is, I love quirky technology.

I have the EVO and my wife has the shift and like others here I like my EVO better. If I was in your situation I might wait for the EVO 3D though.

Thanks for letting us know about your decision. I see your rooted. The Evo has great development. I just seem I can't put it down. Checkout the roms and hacks section. You know just to get a feel.

The Evo isn't last gen but is still a great phone. If I were you I would wait to see what else comes out and being Android there will definitely be something big down the pipe....hmmm quad core :) perhaps

This might be the most important point for a rooted user. Third party development for the Evo is huge and people will be squeezing whatever comes after ice cream (or is it ice cream sandwich?) onto this phone, well after strong support has faltered for the epic and Evo shift.

Also, people would talk about the epic and shift taking the spot as Sprint's flagship phone? Where are those commercials now? Evo for life.:)

I know a few people with an Epic. Let's just say the development is sub par.
