Hi I'm completely knew to rooting a phone, and was wondering how do you decide which rom to pick?

Every Rom seems to have issues. From what I've read Hydrorom is a good one, but the last few posts on it page say it has syncing issues.

How long does it take to root your phone and how hard is it? I'm worried about bricking the phone. If I do brick it would holding down the volume power and menu, and reinstalling the default android OS fix it?

Welcome! I have some advice for you and I trully do not mean this to be disrespectful in any way.

Back out of this thread and head up to the top of this forum page. There you will find several "stickies". They are VERY informative and will provide you with a lot of answers to your questions. I suggest reading each and every one of them several times until you feel confident enough to take the next step in rooting your phone. Don't just dive in and root it because someone told you it was "cool" to do. Each and every user has a different experience with rooting and its best to find out for yourself if its the right choice for YOU.

Unfortunately your questions you have asked here cannot be answered in a simple one line answer, but like I said you CAN find the answers up in the stickies.

Take your time and enjoy! ;)

Edit - This one is definitely a great one to read a few times.

Thanks. I will start reading more of the stickies. I did give them a quick glance. Which was why I was wondering on what criteria you use to pick a rom, but will give them a more detailed read now

Reading everything you possibly can is a good place to start. Also remember that rooting is not a sprint, its a marathon. Slow and steady wins the race.

You don't have to pick one, pledge half your stuff to it, and hope you're happy with your choice in 5 years... You just have to pick one to start with. ;)
I have only linked ROMs and recoveries that I think are suitably stable and viable for new users in the Welcome Guide. I have also noted where certain ROMs that have allure may not be the best choice (i.e CM9/ICS ports) at present.

Here are some tips to avoid bricking:
  • Read, read, read, then follow the guides.
  • I suggest going the manual route instead of an automated GUI tool--at least for your first time, preferably on a Linux box. You should understand what you are doing and there are so many driver issues with Windows that can complicate things.
  • Ask questions if you're not sure. We are happy to help, if you've done your homework. (We put hours into the guides we post, please read them first.)
  • Take your time. (I think I also took 2 hours my first time. :-[ )
  • Charge your battery fully before you sit down to do it.
  • Be sure you have at least 500MB free on your SD card. Consider upgrading to a better, larger one. Backup files are large and so are ROM zips.
  • Do nandroid backups before you remove any system apps or install any root apps and periodically, too. I like to do it on days where I'm really feeling good about my setup.
  • DO NOT use ROM Manager.

Good luck!

Pick a compatible ROM, download it and copy it to your SD card, reboot into your custom recovery (COT) to wipe and flash. Reboot, wait about 10 minutes, enjoy!
