Who wants to get a new Nokia Android phone?

I have absolutely no interest in seeing Nokia anything ever. That said, if they execute well, I'll be approximately 3rd in line to change my mind. I've just never seen anything I liked from them other than the camera performance that they had years ago.

And the article specifies that this isn't a Nokia product, it's Nokia selling it's name to another company that's making devices. :(

I guess I'm thinking of it being like when Lenovo bought Moto mobility. There are phones coming out with the Moto name, but they're definitely Lenovo phones without much input from those who used to sell phones with the Moto name. I dont think Nokia is going to have much, if any input on these devices - whereas Apple has total control of every decision about their iPhones that are manufactured by third parties on their behalf.

I see what you're saying there. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Then again, perhaps Nokia could make a Nexus device. It would probably have an awesome camera, since Nokia still owns all its imaging patents (actually all of its patents other than HERE, which was sold--Microsoft never acquired any patents from Nokia, unlike Google which did acquire Moto's patents).

Me... I am interested as all billyhell.

I have a desire to have a new 1520 like phone, amoled screen, 6 gigs of ram, up to 2 TB SD card slot ip68 rating, ir blaster, fm radio with the newest fastest processor/gpu with the upgraded 920 camera and xenon flash with better slow motion and ois raw capabilities and full controls with 4 microphones a better amp and dac then my v10 and the HTC 10 with boomsound speakers and no carrier bloat. Add in a 4000 mah removable battery with a removable back with the choices being plastic like the Lumina line, top quality Italian leather like the g4 had, glass like the iphone/Samsung phone, and metal like the HTC...

This would be a killer device... IMHO

These are Nokia people who will have total control of the design and implementation of these new phones... Foxconn is just building them.

I'm not seeing that in the article:

[ Nokia*is getting back into the world of phones and tablets. The Finnish vendor has licensed its name and IP to HMD, a newly-minted entity tasked with creating a portfolio of devices running Android that carry Nokia's iconic name. HMD and Nokia have also partnered with FIH Mobile Limited, a subsidiary of Foxconn that just acquired Microsoft's feature phone business for $350 million, including manufacturing, sales and distribution.

HMD has also acquired rights to use Nokia's branding on feature phones from Microsoft, allowing it to churn out new feature phones carrying the Nokia logo. With the deal with FIH in place, HMD will retain "full operational control of sales, marketing and distribution of Nokia-branded mobile phones and tablets" globally. Nokia is providing "branding rights and cellular standard essential patent licenses" to HMD, and will receive royalty payments in return. ]

This really reads to me as if Nokia is licensing their brand to HMD. And then foxconn is making the design to HMD's specs. So that makes HMD the shot caller, not Nokia. Now it does say HMD has some former Nokia execs, but so too with Lenovo still having some Moto execs.

Read again what it says and who is doing this.. These are ex-Nokia employees and they have full control of the design and development of these phones.. The feature phones are different from the full slate of smartphones and tablets that are going to come.

Right, HMD has some ex Nokia employees. And HMD has full control, not Nokia - although it does sound like Nokia has a little bit of oversight as part of the licensing agreement - they get to set the terms of the licensing requirements. What we should expect is an HMD vision of smartphones, which may or may not resemble the old Nokia phones that took Windows phones from 1% to actually being sought after (briefly). I get people are optimistic based on the press release and their hope that having a few people carry over from the old company will mean they might see a modern version of what they loved. But we in the Android world just went through a similar press release, vision statement and hope for a continuation of Moto's rise from nothingness to one of the best second wind underdog's in mobile history (this also sounds like Nokia because they're the other player) and Lenovo, who also has a ton of moto actors and the Moto IP and brand, destroyed nearly everything that made moto great within about 12 months. Nokia's been offline for about that long and nothing in this article made me see anything that didn't scream of Lenovo's abuse of the Moto name. It's okay to be optimistic, just understand I'm not - because we just got burned hard on this - and it started with an uncannily similar post.

I understand completely, but I am truly optimistic about this, since it is under Finnish control not Chinese. This isn't a slash & burn type scenario as with Lenovo did with Moto..

If they make stuff as durable as they used to why the hell not? Something with flagship specs, N9 looks and can go toe to toe with Thor's hammer is a dream device for me.

I think Nokia failed big, they didn't listen to what their clients wanted and their dug their own grave. They do have the experience to make good technology just if they stop bein stubborn :)

I would like to, provided that they make one that has a 5" screen size or lower with at least midrange specs. If not, not interested. I would read the reviews though.

Most consumers won't know this. It will be really cool to see Nokia devices back in the stores. Time to upgrade from my 3310! Been holding out for years lol

Nokia will have one board member in the HMD Global board. But almost all people there are ex Nokians or have coming from Microsofts phone division.
So the "know how" are in place.

HMD Global/Foxconn have also just starting manufacturing in India again with Nokia devices.
Very important market and a good strategy, to avoid high important taxes on phones.
One reason Apple/iPhone have failed in India, they are to expensive to import there.

I think the "new Nokia" have all thing in place to go after Samsung within a year or so. They will have a big portfolio of Nokia devices from the cheapest feature phone to expensive Android flagship devices at the end of this year or early 2017. And more models will be in the pipeline.
