Who's switching from getting the EVO LTE to the SGS3?

People get too caught up in cell speeds. I get that some people really do need higher speeds but average Joe really doesn't as most data is app related as opposed to downloads. Black E4GLTE it is for me!

Yeah, the Benchmark Boyz are starting to annoy me. Leave all of the benchmark stuff to the administrators/mods on this site.

In 6 months there will probably be a faster phone out or coming out anyway.

I'm picking the EVO LTE as better as well, but...

"I wonder if this could be a negative for reception?"

The upper third of the phone will be composite (plastic) for the antenna to receive /transmit.

"Reviews have reported default audio (without Beats turned off) is very tinny and sub-par compared to default audio on any other average device. Sounds like "Beats" is just a good EQ setting, and without it is just a bad EQ setting. I dunno, just seems gimmicky."

Beats Audio is an option to get a better sound out of your device. It has been proven by manufacturers and individuals to be superior than standard mobile devices sound quality.

"Where did you get June for S3 from? I thought May 29 for Europe only was confirmed so far."

I cannot name my source. But I can say that the Samsung Galaxy III will be on Sprint soon also. Also the Sprint LTE network will be activated VERY, VERY, VERY SOON, and in many more cities that was originally forecasted.

"HD Voice only works between other phones (just EVO LTE?) that also have HD Voice, and only when both are calling through the Sprint network, and only once they create an HD Voice network ("Sprint expects to deploy HD Voice capable networks in the future"). This one seems gimmicky too. At least for now.."

Again, HD Voice is going to be an improvement over the existing voice quality of current mobile devices. IMO, any improvement is a great thing in the mobile market. 3D was a gimmick. Beats Audio, HD Voice, Kickstand, Superior camera...these are not gimmicks, but significant improvements in the world of mobile devices.

"S3 will of course have LTE on Sprint... right?"

Yes it will,as well as HD Voice.

I keep seeing this mentioned a lot. Can you summarize, or point to a good layman description of what the deal with this is/implications are? I found it relatively painless (following online instructions) to root and install a custom ROM on my OptimusS. I'm wondering if it will be more of a pain with the EVO LTE if/when I decide to do it (and if it can be done...?)?

xda-developers - View Single Post - [RECOVERY] TeamWin Recovery Project (twrp) 2.1.2 [2012-04-27]

Most thorough description of the issues with HTC Unlock.

On that note I think we should raise the point to HTC that this locking down of the device does not suite our needs.Key points of fail would be as follows.

(1) Can NOT flash the boot partition from recovery. I've personally contacted HTC on this numerous times and they seem to just not care. Responding with "It's a security issue" and so forth. I would love to know how this is a security issue of any sort. Every other Android device has this ability except HTC devices since they started the HTC unlock ordeal. It's utter fail IMHO and HTC should listen to our needs .

(2) Can NOT flash recovery or boot partitions from system. This issue is NOT a deal breaker and isn't so bad when it comes down to the nitty gritty. But since the issue above exists, flashing with applications like htc dumlock and such were our only options. These work around apps cant be used to flash now because of the lockpout from system and it wouldn't be such an issue if HTC didnt lock us out in recovery from flashing boot.

(3) Can NOT flash P*IMG.zips in hboot/bootloader anymore. For the unlocked device running a custom firmware this is a must. Specially when radio updates and such are needed from the OEM. We seen a big use of this on the Sensation when HTC updated the device from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich. The update required new hboots, radios, and partitioning to actually use. So in that instead of having to flash a RUU Which didn't exist the only choice was to flash a custom P*IMG.zip that included all the radios and images need to run the builds. At this point we can't update those image/partitions without flashing an RUU. This makes no since and doesn't seem to do anything but make things more difficult on the unlocker to customize and modify their device.

(4) If all the conditions above HAVE to exist. Then why not give us documentation or utilities to flash fimware.zips from recovery like HTC does? When HTC was the proud Nexus device there was full support and documentation available on how to flash firmware on their devices. This made anyone choosing an HTC device blessed with knowing that their device was not only open and unlocked, but when flashing firmware that it was being flashed correctly to Google and HTC's standards. This code has now been moved out of recovery since right before the move to edify scripting and moved to vendor/htc/ (not arguing this choice as thats where it belongs from a maintaining point of view). But the problem is that vendor/htc is proprietary now. Which means Documentation and support for flashing firmware correctly is not available and left to developers of recoveries for the community to figure out. One would think if HTC was standing behind us that they would step up and give us a PROPER/OPEN/REAL unlock, or if they cant for the lame excuse of security concerns, then give us the documentation and utilities to flash the boot and firmware partitions properly. I mean really... what is there to lose there?

(5) WHAT WAS THE POINT OF HTC UNLOCK? It was to reach out and accept us as a community. It was to keep us from having to exploit their firmware and look for holes to gain control of a device we rightfully own. WHAT DID HTC UNLOCK DO? It unlocked the devices at first and with each new revision of the unlock it gets more locked down and harder for us to use it as intended. WHAT DOES THAT LEAD TO? It leads to us hoping someone will take the time out of their life and exploit HTC's firmware so we can have access and control of our devices. I mean, it's bad when u have people poking a device with a paperclip to get a device unlocked to avoid a official unlock.

Bottom line; I'm personally fed up with HTC's unlock. It's absolute crap! It does not serve the purpose it was intended and only makes things harder then they were before. As a devoted HTC customer it has me questioning if my next device will be an HTC. With all the other options that would allow me to spend less time trying to gain proper access to my device and more time actually having fun with it, why choose HTC? Everyone else is shying away for these same issues. Everyone with an HTC unlocked device waits for someone to exploit HTC's firmware and give them a proper unlock. Why not just choose a device without the locked down/unlock instead? IDK but HTC needs to step up and listen to us. Every HTC forum with an HTC Unlock is screaming for these issues to be fixed.

My call to HTC is to fix these issue and/or give us proper documentation on flashing firmware to our devices via custom recoveries. The boot flashing lockout is dumb, pointless, and in NO WAY a security threat AT ALL and is nothing more then a CRAP RESPONSE to something that they sould be working to correct, instead of ignoring. In the end its hurting HTC's relations with developers and is ultimately doing the opposite of what it's original intent.

HTC, PLEASE READ AND LISTEN!!!11ONEone

To everyone else, SPREAD THE WORD!!!ONEone
This is the future of HTC unlock and each new device it gets worse. Maybe HTC will listen and address these issues, then again maybe we will just need to find another OEM that supports us and does listen.

I have had the moment, the hero, optimus s, epic 4g, evo 4g, evo 3d, and now the E4GT. I loathed the moment and hero, but enjoyed hacking both. The optimus was a great little device except its low storage capacity for apps. I loved my OG Evo and Epic, great phones to root and rom. The 3D was great as well, big props to the devs who figured out how to rollback the hboot. But the E4GT is an amazing phone with great hardware, and definitely my favorite so far. I can't wait to try both the E4GLTE and the S3. 3

I'm not a "rooter", but i certainly suppoythose of you who are. Here is one thing I don't understand about it: isn't it always just a matter of time before a way to do these things is found and exploited? If so, why do manufacturers make its difficult? Anyone who does this knows they could potentially be voiding any warranty, why not just make it as simple as clicking an "I agree" checkbox?

No, depending on what restrictions are on the bootloader it can be impossible to ever it get it fully unlocked to allow the flashing of custom roms. Which I feel sorry for those "rooters" who want the at&t one x.

Rooting issues aside (I'm not a rooter), I don't even see how HTC -vs- Samsung is a question. HTC makes more solid hardware. Period. I'm completely devastated that Samsung has reportedly been awarded the contract to make the Nexus' 4th generation handset. HTC or another manufacturer should get a shot. Sony would have been an interesting choice as well.

One thing, among many others, you can say about HTC is they have great hardware.

I've been a fan of HTC phones for a decade, but was honestly willing to give Samsung a shot. Based on what I've read and seen in reviews, I'll be sticking to HTC. Here's why:

First and foremost is the camera. There's no replacing a dedicated camera button, and the fact that you can go from the phone in standby to taking pictures almost instantly is critical for anyone who has "missed the shot" because they were unlocking the phone, launching the app and waiting for the focus and shutter delay. I also think its a poor design on the gs3 that you must go into a menu to select burst mode. Again, that's not going to help catch those quick shots. I love that you can just hold the button down on the evo for picture bursts. I also read about a 20 shot limit to the burst shot feature on the gs3, I don't recall seeing a limit on the evo, although I'm not sure if there in fact is.

Next is the UI. Touchwiz is remedial, and according to the reviews Sammy has done little to improve it. This is a subjective area, but I have always preferred sense, and given that the new evo has the best version of it yet is a plus.

The screen is better on the evo.

Metal vs. Plastic. I choose metal.

I love the kickstand on my evo 4g, so I'm glad its even better one the 4GLTE.

Release dates...this is America, I need instant gratification, don't make me wait!

While watching the launch of the GS3 and reading the reviews I thought some of the features were cool, but the more I thought about it, the more they seemed gimmicky. To be specific:

The camera keeping the screen lit by watching you. Sounds cool, but I can't think of any time I'm using my xoom or my evo that the screen going dark has been a problem. Don't the apps usually address that?

The voice control. This is cool and probably a more seamless experience than having to launch an assistant app, but honestly I don't use voice commands that often. It's pretty rare that I'm in a quiet place with nobody around to think you're talking to them. Hell, I'm in bed right now typing so I don't wake my wife up.

The removable battery. OK, I know I am setting myself up to get flamed here, but the truth is that I have 3 batteries for my evo, and almost never take the time to charge and carry the extras. Don't get me wrong, it would be great to have the option and the gs3 wins here, but given that I rarely use an extra battery with my evo 4g, it becomes almost a non issue with the vastly superior battery life the new evo should have.

developer dont need to use high end phone. So they come up with decent spec and plastic phones. And Gnex is developer phone
This is what I think

I much prefer the EVO 4G LTE because:

1) Superior materials/construction

2) HTC Sense vs Touch Wiz

3) Physical appearance

4) Higher Overall Quality

I am a big HTC fan, had all of the HTC phones from the Hero to E3D, I rely heavily on the 4G Wimax in my area, I will upgrade to the E4GLTE once I get LTE in my area. The E3D is fine for now and does everything I need it to do.

This is going to be a difficult decision. I was really disappointed with the OG Epic when it came out (lack of support by Samsung and Sprint, plus lack of developers), and I kicked myself for not getting the Evo 4G. The Galaxy II was worlds above the original and I was unimpressed by the Evo 3D. It's a toss up right now. If the sprint version of the GS3 is more aesthetically pleasing and outperforms the Evo LTE I might think about getting it.

Best guess is it will have the same performance because it is going to be the same chipset. Let us know what you decide in 6 months (after the GS3 is hopefully out :D).

I decided to get the Evo after consideration.

I'm upgrading from the S1 Epic so it will be a big step.

Reasons:
1: I can get the Evo now, and being in the Chicago area we will get LTE sooner. Had Wimax but rarely used it anyway. Wifi usually or 3G was fine for anything else.

2: GPS. I'm sick and tired of samsung's gps. Constant issue's on my Epic and my wife's Epic Touch (GII).

3: Other misc issue's with my samsung phone, crashes etc. Ready to try something else.

For a minute I've thought about it but I'm too much of a HTC fan to switch, besides Samsung's phones are just too cheap looking and feeling and I like Sense.

I hated the original galaxy a but I also hate my evo 3d... I wish Sony would release there phones for sprint. But I guess I'll wait for both phones to be released before I buy either of them.
