Why aren't I receiving Gmail push notifications on the Galaxy S6?

Hello everyone,

I had these issues with the sync of Gmail and I'm still having them, if I'm not applying the following workaround:

Enter in GMAIL app, then go to Settings for the account/accounts that you are having configured inside the APP and then click on

Inbox sound & vibrate and now is the tricky thing that it will solve your problem

UNCHECK (if it is checked already) the following option

Notifi for every message - UNCHECK this option and then test the push function by sending an e-mail to your address.

Tell me if now is working fine!

Thanks!
Andrei

Goodness me! thanks for this.has to be a bug with the app, wou've never figured this out

This worked for me, at long last (Marshmallow): Backup & reset > Network settings reset > RESET SETTINGS. Bingo!

My G4 just started having this issue. Tried everything in this thread with no luck. Toggling the Sync Gmail off then on in the settings within the gmail app causes it to sync once, but after that nothing. This is such a frustrating issue.

Same problem on a Huawei P8 tried everything, you think you have it fixed then when you open your phone the emails arrive.

I had the issue and when I went into play store to the Gmail app and hit uninstall, I started getting them. Try that and see if it's your hangup also.

But if you uninstall gmail how do you get gmail notifications?

Didn't uninstall. I pressed uninstall...it changed uninstall button to "update"...and didn't confirm it or press update. Not sure if it is a glitch in the play store or just my own phone but believe it or not this allowed me to get my emails again.

Oddly that option is in Playstore for me too. It should say uninstall updates but it does say uninstall.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

SOLVED! I had same problem and after one of the recent updates, I realized I had power saving mode set to On. After the update, power saving mode seems to have disabled background data, which includes syncing. I disabled Power Saving mode and viola! Gmail now syncs in real time.
Enjoy!

I've been enjoying my new Galaxy S6 for the past couple days but one thing I've noticed is that I'm not receiving any Gmail push notifications. I only ever notice new emails getting pulled in when I open the Gmail (or Inbox) app, and it executes a refresh now that the app is open. If I'm not using the app or my phone's screen is off -- nothing.

I've tried a number of different things, including making sure Power Saving mode is turned off and ensuring that auto sync is enabled for my Google account. I've also made sure that all the appropriate Gmail labels are set to notify me.

One thing I've noticed, in the process of discovery for my Gmail issues, is that when looking at my Google sync information on my phone, the "last synced at" time is usually very out of date.. sometimes it's a couple hours ago, sometimes it's a day ago. I'm wondering if my phone is for some reason just not polling on a regular, more reasonable interval.

FYI I'm getting push notifications from other apps (including Hangouts) as expected.

Is anyone experiencing the same scenario with the S6 (or perhaps something similar with the Note 4 or S5)? Where you able to fix it somehow? Any insights would be helpful.

My email accounts have not synced since April 7th. I've tried everything also. If I go into the account my mail is posted but I get no notifications on my desktop application and if open app. There's nothing. I can't seem to make any progress with Google help either

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

Thanks!, this has mostly worked for me, at least I just got my first notification in months (I usually keep most notifications off intentionally but I'm now trying to implement push notifications in an app of my own, the debugging of which brought me to this thread).

These days I mostly use Inbox much more than gmail (gmail only when really necessary). Following your exact instructions, I was able to get gmail notifications. I looked in Inbox -> Settings, and in there it actually refers to gmail notifications. I know they are the same box so I take it to mean gmail notifications are the way to get Inbox notifications as well, regardless of the fact that in Settings (phone) -> Apps -> ... both gmail and inbox have a "notifications" checkbox (I'm supposing because it's an Android standard. I'm on 4.4 yet).

This problem started for me when I tried using Google Inbox instead of the Gmail app. Inbox worked fine (including notifications) but I decided I preferred the Gmail app. When I switched back, Gmail notifications no longer worked. I received messages but no notifications.

I tried many of the things suggested in this thread, but what I found fixed the problems was this:

Settings, Sound & Notification, App notifications. From here I scrolled to Gmail and noticed that it was set to block all notifications. I corrected this setting and bingo - all is well.

I think Inbox changes this setting on installation so that you don't see two notifications (one from Gmail and one from Inbox) but doesn't change it back on uninstall. Hope this helps some of you.

I have another question about email sync. Currently I turn auto sync on and set up sync for yahoo email every 15 minutes (as soonest) and once per day for gmail (as soonest), so notification of new emails only comes at the time it syncs (15 minutes for yahoo and one day for gmail account), but impossible to set it to get notification sooner or immediately?
