Can't log into my Google account on my phone - no issues when using browser

I have a Samsung Galaxy ace 2, since a week or so I haven't been able to log into my Google account and Play store. I have reset my phone to factory settings, hoping this would work, but I keep getting the error 'username/password incorrect'.
I am 100% sure I am typing the right password, because when I open my browser and login to my Google account it works fine.

Anyone who knows how to fix this? Thanks!

Welcome to Android Central! Is the phone's time and date absolutely correct?

Yes the time and date are correct. Apps that are pre-installed work fine just like the internet.

You will need to create an application specific password.

On Google support, search for document 1173270 or "Application-specific password required". I can't post links yet, so you'll need to hunt down the last bit on your own. But the answer is on Google.

Had the exact same problem with a phone stuck on an older Android release that I needed to use in an emergency. The error message suggested that it as a date/time problem, but it wasn't.
