When you connect it, do you see a connection option in your notification bar? Sounds like the File Transfer mode (or MTP) is not active and the USB Mode for the phone has been set to Charge. You can change this in the Developer Options of your phone, but if you don't have those enabled, you should still see a pop-up or a notification for the connection when you plug it in.
