Why can't I see thumbnail images

When I try to open a photo to edit on my Galaxy S8 using any photo/editing app (Snapseed, Eyeem, Instagram) the thumbnail won't appear under the "IMAGES" drop-down menu. There are many alternate sources of accessing the files however the top option, images, will not show the thumbnails only the red icon where the thumbnail pic should be. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Are these saved on a SD card, device or cloud services

They are saved on internal storage and also on both the Samsung cloud and Google drives. There is no SD card installed yet. The pics/ thumbnails are visible using other search methods like dicectly thru the files or drives its the device image folder that is the problem.

I have found a fix
Just press on the three lines on top left of the screen then scroll down and choose gallery
