Why did AT&T update delete random photos on my S9?

My daughter's S9 updated yesterday and deleted photos from August 2018 forward to yesterday in a random way. I see where this has been a problem at least since April 2018 with S7s. Can these photos be recovered from her 64 GB SD card if so how?
