Why do I have such short battery life and high temperatures?

short battery life and high temperatures

In the past week (no new apps added) my Nexus 7 2012 has started running hot to the touch (99-104F) and the battery life is down to a few short hours. Would replacing the battery help with something like this or is it a sign of something software related?

Welcome to Android Central.

That could indeed be a failing battery, especially if it also charges abnormally quickly.

But do your battery usage stats reveal anything unusual?

Oddly no change in charging time or unusual app indication in the battery settings. Nothing had been changed and the android updates had been making improvements since the original abomination.

If you have an SD card inserted, remove it (after unmounting it, or with the tab turned off). A looped directory entry in the SD card can eat a lot of battery quickly. (It's fixable - you'll lose two files at worst.)

No SD card on this one...I replaced the battery and was having the same problem with the heat and battery drain. Getting mad over dropping the cash and time I started removing apps to see if that helped. No luck with that and right before I reset the whole darn thing I finally read something about getting rid of the apps that monitor and remove apps in the background, plus the one that monitors the temperature.

In about 1 minute after getting rid of those and cache wipe it was running fine. Battery will last as long as it used to and the temp of the unit was barely above that of room temperature. I promptly kicked myself for trusting apps that were "supposed" to prevent the very problem they caused. Oh well, lesson learned I guess.
