Why do I have to open my tablet to get my Push Notifications?

Push Notifications

I've had my Tab S for almost a week now. I'm sure when I first got it I received "push notifications" even with the cover closed and in sleep mode. Now I do not. I don't get the notifications until I open the cover and the tablet wakes up. I've checked everywhere I have found to check that sync and notifications are on but haven't been successful. I'd hate to do a factory reset after getting everything set up but that's my next option. Any suggestions would be appreciated. :-\

Do you have the "WIFI off during sleep" enabled? If so, then you won't get any email when the cover is closed (and the tablet is in sleep).

I have Wifi set to be always on. I went through all the settings again plus apps, turned notifications off and back on. I'm now getting most push notifications but it's not consistent. Not sure what is going on.
