Why do I need a case?

I never understand why anyone WOULDN'T get a case, with all of the horror stories of people dropping phones and tablets. Is it sexy without a case ? Hell yeah. Is it sexy with a cracked screen or having to buy a new screen or tablet ? Hell no.

I hate cases. I've never felt the need for a case nor the insurance. Having had literally dozens of devices over the years, I'm easily self insured. If ever I should damage my Nexus 7, I will have a new one from Walmart within an hour.

That's terrific for you, but there are certainly people who have to save up for a while to buy their device. So if you need to protect your investment, a case is a smart move.

A case with the magnetic sleep/wake feature takes zero extra time to use as compared to a pouch, and protects the screen when I throw the tablet in my bag. It also has a hand strap, making it really easy to hold the tablet with little effort. I've tried it both ways, and for me the auto-sleep case wins by a mile.

I went naked for several weeks while waiting for cases to become available and found myself anxious about transporting my N7 in a way I never am with my Nexus 4 (which is naked). I think it's because I can't easily stick the N7 in a pocket and just throwing it in a backpack seemed like asking for damage. So it lives in a case.

Different strokes for different folks but some like to keep their gear in new condition. I have that particular disorder and just can't have peace of mind if I'm NOT using a case and screen protector.

Electronics are not investments. If you are over the age of 18 and you needed to "save up" to buy a $200 gadget you're in trouble...

So if a $200 gadget is worth putting a case on because you want to keep said gadget in new condition something is wrong with that somehow in some parallel universe? Okay.

Look, not everyone has a lot of disposable income, and it isn't their fault. It doesn't mean that they're not allowed to enjoy a nice tech gadget. But it does mean they have to work hard and save the money left over after they've finished paying for essential needs, so it's worth protecting what they worked hard for, don't you think?

I tend to run with no form of protection on my phones and tablets. I prefer that experience and I'm willing to accept the increased potential for damage as a result. My HTC One has a carbon fiber and vinyl adhesive covering on the back (it looks and feels very nice, and the protection factor is there). It adds virtually no size to the device, and I've chosen to leave the front, sides, top, and bottom exposed. As a result, my One has some dings around the metal body from being dropped onto concrete. All but one of those drops were caused by others. My 2013 Nexus 7 has a noticeable half-inch-long scratch in the screen, and I have a completely wrecked Nexus 4 in front of me (though I will admit that no case or protector would've saved it). I've been willing and able to go without protective accessories on a majority of the devices I've owned. Though I suppose that monstrous extended battery for the Thunderbolt qualifies as protective gear. :p

Not everyone is willing or able to do so, whether the reasons stem from liability, financial, or personal preference motivations. If we want to get into the "cases vs. naked" debate here, let's at least recognize that. See this statement of wisdom:

It's really a personal decision. How much risk somebody is willing to accept, versus how much weight and bulk they are willing to accept.

But think of how the phones feel when they hit the concrete with no protection. Not only does it hurt for sure like hell but they have to live with those blemishes for the rest of their lives. It might...it might affect their self-esteem. Other phones see them and snicker and call them names like "Scarface" and "CrackBaby". Take your wants and desires out of it and think of the phones.

This was my thinking as well. I'm not using a case with my smartphone because I can protect it in my pocket, but my N7 is a different story. I do tend to like using my devices without a case, but after some deliberation, I decided to get a Poetic Slimline (which should be arriving today!)

One added benefit of having this case, I think, is that it will be easier to turn the device on - if it's laying flat on a table, I normally have to pick up the tablet in order to press the power button (since it's sort of recessed inward into the side of the tablet). However, with a magnetic cover, all I'll need to so is open it up!

This is my first tablet. I can't think of any compelling reason to get a case. I have a small tablet stand for my desk, and I just put it in a cloth pouch thing when traveling. I prefer to "tablet" naked :-)

What benefit is there to also getting a case?

You don't need a case. Just like you don't really need a helmet when riding a motorcycle.....

Until you slip up and highly regret that decision.... That's just a bad experience waiting to happen. I should know, I didn't have a case on my iPhone and it slid out of the dock in my car and slammed against the window. Needless to say, it was a $200 visit to Apple I could have avoided

I have an N 7/12 and a 7/13. I'll be getting a Poetic case, and a soft silicone protector for routine use. The Poetic has magnets, but when I want to use the magnetometers (compass, etc), I'll move it to the soft one.

A "barefoot" N 7/13 is wondrously thin, and light enough not to cause much RSI until your hand and wrist gain strength. Nevertheless, it's awfully vulnerable.

I vowed that I'd always be careful with the /12, but did drop it on its corners maybe three times. It survived nicely. The next time, though, it fell face down, apparently parallel to the (vinyl tile) floor, and the glass hit hard onto a grain of sand, or such. There's a pit where it hit, and roughly a couple of dozen complete cracks radiating from the pit. The display is fine; for the most part, cracks don't show. I assume that most owners know that the digitizer (touch sensor) is on [the underside of] the top glass layer, and cracks destroy it.

I investigated repairing, and it's costly. Asus will (did?) do it (in Texas), and charges $170 or so; no mention of whether they'll preserve your data. That charge seems awfully steep until you consider that replacing the digitizer alone is apparently neither easy nor simple. I did investigate, but that's getting off-topic.
