Why do I now have to dial 1 plus area code plus the number to place calls?

Used to just dial the number for local calls, now I get recorded message saying you must dial 1 plus area code...what changed?

The carrier changed. Either you're near Canada or Mexico, or your carrier changed their switching. Just add +1 plus the area code to every one of your numbers. If you hit a switch that doesn't need it, it gets ignored.
