Why do phone updates stop my ability to text from my private line?

I have a private line. To expose my number, all of my contacts have *82 as a prefix. I used to be able to text listing the number with *82. A few years ago, an "update" (I use that term jokingly) blocked my ability to numbers with the prefix *82. I had to go through my complete contact list and enter the same number without the *82 as an alternate to use for texting. Now, this new Pi in the face update, even if I have a contact listed with both numbers, IT WILL NOT LET ME TEXT TO ANY CONTACT WHERE THERE IS ALSO A *82 NUMBER. I cannot even respond to someone who texts me if they are listed in my contacts with both numbers. THIS IS NOT UPDATING. THIS IS A RETURN TO THE DARK AGES.

Edit: I understand. So the *82 shows the number to your contacts since it's a private line.
