Why do you choose Android?

I'm a little torn between iOS and Android.

Even though I like android better, I've been running into many incompatibility issues with it because of the different hardware specs, something that doesn't happen as often with an iPhone.

Until two days ago, I chose BlackBerry (OS5 to OS10 - Curve 8520, Bold 9900, Z10, Q10). After a week of using the latest 10.3 update I decided to roll back to 10.2, as that was the BB10 experience I wanted. Everything worked really well in 10.2 and I loved my Q10, but 10.3 made me hate using the thing, it was that counter productive for what I do and that buggy. Android apps taking over from native BB10 apps, being slower or just not working at all..

So after a month of using the older OS version, being reminded several times a day that an update is available, I realized that I just didn't like the direction Blackberry went and was headed. It was time for me to move on.

I spent weeks researching Windows Phone and Androd, as well as what unlocked devices I cold get for under $200 total. In the end I went for Android, because it has all the programs I want to use and the long term freedom to root my device and customize it to my last liking. It was a tough choice, as Win8.1/10 are quite compelling as well.

I picked up a 2014 Moto E on sale and despite it being a hardware downgrade, it is a fantastic experience. I like small phones with curved backs and the E feels WAY better than my old squared off BB Z10, while also being easier to grip than the Q10 (just that wee bit thinner in width). Sure, the camera sucks even by comparison to the lack luster camera on the Z10/Q10, but otherwise it's just as good or better. Pretty solid for a cheapy phone lol...

I plan on keeping my Q10 in case I change my mind, but now I understand why so many people use Android... It's pretty awesome!

The main reason would probably be because Android lets apps do more than iOS. One of the first things I do when I try a new application (on a phone or computer) is check the settings to see what my options are. In iOS many apps don't have ANY settings. And those that do don't even have them associated with the app. This makes me feel extremely limited regardless of device or platform. My first impulse is always to tweak things so that they'll work better for me. If I can't do that I get frustrated.

I'm not super tech savy so rooting/jail breaking isn't really my thing (although I've tried it). But I do want to be able to customize how my device works to fit my needs. It is one of the things I love about computers. I feel the same way about my phone. One example: I love that I can change the default swipe up on the home button gesture on my Nexus 5 from activating Google Now, a function Google thinks I need, to turning my screen off without using the power button, a function I KNOW I need. All I had to do was download an app (Screen Off in case anyone is wondering) from the play store.

Apple recently got mad and temporarily pulled an app that allowed shortcuts for things like contacts etc in the widget shade. Seriously what do they think widgets are for?! I haven't found a single widget on iOS (on my iPad) that is even remotely useful because of the way Apple restricts their OS.

EDIT: I realize I accidentally made this about Android vs iOS. Windows would be nice but I'm heavily entrenched in the google ecosystem and Google doesn't play nice with windows. :-(

Main reason is customisation, I get bored fairly easy with my devices and changing the way it looks with launchers, icon packs helps it feel new. Also the types of apps that can be made like link bubble or launchers or pie etc which can change the way you use a phone. The other reason was I always prefer to just connect my device to laptop and drag and drop my files instead of having to sync things up in the early years but now thats not so much of an issue with cloud services.

Back when the iPhone 5 came out, I didn't think it was worth buying so I decided to buy my first Android phone and that was a Nexus 4.

I like that I don't have to use any app to put music or pictures on my phone. I can just connect it to my Surface Pro 3 and just drop whatever I want into a folder. Plus, there are no limits on how I can arrange the icons and leave blank spaces in between unlike the iPhone.

Also, I can use Amazon or even that other site that has apps that they won't allow on the Play store such as Adaway.

I still like using an iPhone too. I have an iPhone 6+ that I use every day.

Compatibility - charge the device and transfer data to/from any computer with a standard USB cable

Customization - ability to make the device truly unique and yours, great community support

Hardware - many competing manufacturers, better price for similar (or better) hardware devices

And then came s6. No removable battery, no sd, and price wise the same as iphone6.
All chargers must be made compatible for all phones now.
Love it.
