Why does Android Auto not work after the Marshmallow update?

If your phone won't connect with MTP switch to PTP mode. I have a T-Mobile Note 4 and Note 7 that both stopped connecting to AA with MTP, but work fine in PTP when they updated to marshmallow.

The problem actually is with the headunit manufacturers as well. I have faced the same problem while working on my app (see http://forums.androidcentral.com/android-auto/722092-android-auto-your-tablet.html ), yes you can mock around with the settings on the phone, but that's not really the problem. Since Marshmallow, when you connect your device to a PC (or any other device if that matters) the phone will present itself differently compared to how it did in Lollipop. I have fixed this in my app, by simply re listing the attached USB devices, while the phones which runs lollipop present a USB ID on the second they are connected, Marshmallow+ doesn't so the headunit providers need to update the Android Auto code, instead of grabbing USB ID on connection, re iterate trough connected devices after a connection is detected... sorry if it sound complicated....

Hi, I have a S5 with Android 6.01 (marshmallow?) and just bought a Kenwood 893s. I have the android auto (just downloaded) and when hooked up to the car it states unsupported devise. I don't know if its the phone software, Kenwood software-just updated (friend has same deck and mine worked in his car but his didnt work in mine) or cables. Anyone have this issue?

If it worked in your friend's car but not yours my first guess would be cable. If you haven't already, try the OEM charge/sync cable that came with your phone. There's lots of posts about how finicky it can be with non-OEM cables.

I have a Note 4 that was recently upgraded to Marshmallow and just bought a new car with AA already installed in the head unit. When I first tried to connect I got those 'not supported' messages and it wouldn't stay connected unless I changed USB config from MTP to PTP.

Works like a charm now. I just have to change the USB config every time before connecting.

I have a Samsung Note 4 from T-mobile SM-N910T3 at 6.0.1 security patch October 1, 2016 baseband N910T3UVU3EPJ2 build number MMB29M.N910T3UVU3EPJ2. I have a 2016 Malibu Premier with the upgraded Bose audio.

Android auto worked for over 6 months until the most recent security patches. Now there is nothing I can do to make it connect to Android auto. I've tried multiple USB data cables. I used code *#0808# in my dialer and changed it to MTP +ADB and that worked for 4 or 5 days. Now no matter what I do, when I plug the Note 4 into the front USB port, like I have for over 6 months, it asks if it's ok to connect with MTP yes or no. That's it. It does work as a USB connection to my music files. Bluetooth works correctly. No Android Auto. Removed app and reinstalled. Deleted cache. Did factory reset. Tried every option on USB connections screen from *#0808#, rebooting after each one, double checking that it was still set to that before I tried it, every option from developer options, usb settings. Nothing works now.

In addition, my Wife uses a Samsung 6 world phone, and it works! AAAHHHHH!!!

Needless to say this is beyond frustrating. I bought the Malibu because of android auto. I love android auto's maps and audio functions. I'm now looking for another phone like a Nexus 6, ut who knows if they will work or not or work then stop working? I HATE Iphones, but I'm actually considering getting one for the first time just to have Carplay/something work in my car. I'm not messing with loose cables and windshield/vent car adapters ever again.

I tried my old HTC One M7 from Tmobile on android 5.0.1. It doesn't work with android auto. My Son's LG G5 does work with Android auto.

I feel you....i also have the note4 and it didnt even work for 3 months.... when i connect the device it says that it cant connect....im so desperate for a solution...😣

You've tried a lot and this was probably covered but have you tried deleting the car in the Android Auto app itself and having it re-add?

Re: why does android auto not work after marshmallow update?

Yes. Deleted it from Android auto and Bluetooth. Started everything over from scratch but no go.

Update: I gave up on the note 4. Bought me a Moto X Pure Edition off craigslist. It didn't work at first, but after installing all marshmallow security updates and app updates, it works great.

I just purchased a Subaru Impreza 2017 it came with Android Auto. I put the app on my phone and it seemed to work fine. Then I was informed that Subaru needed to do a software up date on the car. Almost immediately after they did that Android auto started shutting down in the middle of playing a song the screen would go black not on my phone the screen in the car then come back and you have to hit play to get the song to restart told Subaru about it they were like oh we got to replace the radio. They just replace the radio for me and it's doing the same thing. The problem seems most prevalent when I'm on the main screen of Android auto it's a lot less frequent if I'm on the actual music screen although it has happened there also. My Droid Moto z force is running Android 7.0

Samsung 7 Edge All problems of Android Auto connection solved by replacing the USB Cable with new High speed original

Re: why does android auto not work after marshmallow update?

DrKrizzle, thanks! This worked for me!
On Android 7, I get a small dialog box with the prompt, "Use USB for file transfers?". Answering Yes enabled the Android Auto connection

I just finished with T Mobile Tech Support in doing a factory reset because out of nowhere my android auto stopped working on my Samsung galaxy 6s with my 2017 Hyundai. Well the factory reset didn't work either! Now what do you suggest? Hyundai suggests that I upgrade to a new phone. What is stopping the new phone not working after time, as well.... all of a sudden after an update? OOH.. and my husband has the same exact phone, his phone (android auto) works perfectly in my car. We have the same car too but my phone (android auto) does not work in his car! ??

This is very fustrating having applied the latest Android update and now it Android Auto does not work. Is someone ever going to resolve this issue?

Here is some guaranteed steps that will help, I had the same issue and I had to figure out myself, follow the steps exactly as shown below :
1- Delete the android auto from you phone
2- Go to Bluetooth setting and delete your car paired device.
3- Go to your car head unit settings and delete your piared phone listed there too.
4- Go to your phone setting> apps >application manager > setting > storage> clear cache.
5- Reset your head unit to the factory settings
6- Restart you phone
7- Now go ahead and plug in your phone to the android auto USB port, hope this worked for you :)
