Why does my 480x854 screen look like complete crap? :-\

So I got a new phone, an HTC Desire 320, after my HTC One V died on me. Thing is, the screen looks like row-res. Like it literally looks like a buffering youtube video. It's supposed to be HD, beautiful, hi-res, and a step up from the One V (which is 480x800) but the colours look terrible, everything is blurry, and everything is pixelly. All of the reviews I read of the Desire 320 were amazing. Anyone know what the problem is or have experience with this phone? Everything looked amazing on my One V and it looks like a 2001 vintage phone picture on my brand new one. Defective? Should I exchange it for another one? Or is it just a garbage phone?

The One V has a slightly higher ppi, but would that really make this noticeable a difference that it looks like I don't have my glasses on whenever I'm looking at the 320's screen?

Whether you have a defective device I don't know, but 218ppi can't give a very smooth image. Best to compare it to another specimen of the device if you can.

Would the 40 ppi difference really be that visible though? Because I've got them sitting side by side, with the same wallpapers, watching the same youtube videos, etc, and the Desire 320 just looks like trash...

Hello. The specs don't look good, sorry to say. I would check where you saw the claims for HD and superior to your One V.
The two culprits are the basic TFT screen (I think), and the 4.5" against the old 3.7" LCD with only 54 extra horizontal lines and the same vertical lines.

There are many better phones event at that price, so if you can possibly get an exchange or refund within an exchange period, you would be better served.

It would be a emergency back up phone or for someone elderly who would not use many apps. Good luck.

Thanks a lot. I might just bite the bullet and throw down $150 on another One V. It's old, but I know it works with everything I need it for since I had one for almost 3 years. Hahaha.

It really seems the marketing on the Desire 320 is misleading, because I could barely find any info on the image quality other than the screen resolution. Real shame that. Unfortunately, most of the phones from my phone provider (Koodo, in Canada) are really expensive. And none of them are HTCs, and that's the only brand I've found I really like... What a fiasco.

I am in the UK and the 320 is not here, but there are a couple of medium level HTC's that seem good.
You should really venture out from HTC if you are able to spend that much extra.. I see Koodo are doing deals on the Nexus 5, Samsung S3, S4, and a great Deal on the Note 2 (really Samsung's are great phones - they integrate more facilities on their menu's, have great screens and all were top line models.). They also do a Moto G which is miles better than what you had (I have one) but try to get a larger 2014 Moto G2.

Really - a Nexus 5, or an S4 imo, if you can get a great deal, you would be thrilled with. Personally I would go for a Note 2 if they are really cheap. It's big, has great features and still holds up to the Note 3 and 4 with a recent OS update.

The Nexus 5 is probably going to be the most recommended phone. I wouldn't mine trying one, and has a fantastic spec.

I hope you can get something you will like at a good price.

Thing about Samsung phones is that, because of how hi-res the displays are, with how much I use my phone and what I use it for, the battery life would PLUMMET. I'm looking for something with a lower screen resolution than that. :-\

That may have been truer 3 years ago, but most modern phones have hi res screens and more efficient processor / graphics units (Nexus 5). Amoled screens are nice imv.
You will see complaints about Samsung battery life on some models, but they are usually temporary or OS related and easy to isolate. Most people get exemplary battery life. I have a Note 3 and it's been great on the original 1 year old battery.

Bear in mind they are removable and spare betteries are very inexpensive. Samsung bloatware apps can also be mostly disabled if required.

(The latest 2k resolution Note 4 is boasting greater battery life and power saving features.)

The S3 is possibly at the lower end of capacity versus screen-on time / days usage, but you can expect 3-5.5 hours screen time and 18 hours plus battery on most models. I get 5+ hours screen time

You may have a particular situation with access to charging, and the HTC 320 seems to have a large battery and great endurance, but you would not enjoy using it often.

Have a look at threads in the Nexus 5 (non removable), S4 and S3 threads. Motorola are also known for good battery and signal. Samsung wouldn't be #1 for signal radio reception but are good enough if you have coverage.

You shouldn't get hung up on good screens using more battery these days, but everyone has different experiences.
