Why does my LG G3 screen flicker and fades to darkness?

Hi, 2 days ago my G3 have exactly the same problem. I tried the paper trick and it worked for a day. Yesterday i applied thermal paste, downgrading it to kitkat 4.4.2, hitting the phone with my bare hands to make the bad spirit go away and lastly combining all the methods that are posted here. (i didnt tried reheating it or baking it, just not sure how to do it)

I think the issue is the hardware when your phone overheats, the display will go fade to black.
Earlier i noticed that it easily gets hot even if i only use facebook or just setting up the phone and specially when using the camera(when using camera it instantly goes fade to black).

Just want to share some progress of what i did.
-I use a foil as a mini-sinker, folded it twice (estimated height and width as your little finger)
-Apply thermal paste in the CPU
-Put the foil around the CPU (FROM where you put the thermal paste up to the back of the CPU, beneath the volume and power button). the width of the foil must fit in the middle of the board beside the camera.
-Add paper trick
-Put the cover back and DO NOT put the screw in the volume down button.(so that it can breathe)
-set brightness 10% auto (we do not have enough no choice left xD )
-done

After doing this my temperature went down to 42-35° from 55-51°
I tried using the camera again, still it goes fade to black, but other apps such as facebook, youtube etc(havent tried games yet). It wont fade to black.
When i use camera it instantly goes to 57-51° i dont know why, but when i close it and stop using it, it cools down fast to 42-35°

I hope this helps a little tracing the cause of the issue. I think this solves the temperature problem.

Q: is tsens_tz_sensor0 to tsens_tz_sensor10 are the sensor of CPU?

(SOLVED) (SOLUTION) The cause of this problem is the SIM CARD!!!!!

Just remove your current sim card then restart the phone and connect to WIFI. Observe for about 10-15 mins nothing blacking out, flickering like an old light bulb or constantly fading like when you turn off an old TV screen. Then try inserting another sim card to phone. Observe again for a couple of minutes after rebooting.

To confirm if it is the existing SIM card that caused the problem, insert back that original SIM then reboot.

BOOM! it flickers, then fades slowly to black then blacks out so even knocking on the screen won't turn on the display you have to press the power button 2x to open the unlock screen.

This happened to me last week and I observed it using different scenarios (eg. turning off wifi, turning off data, turning off face detection then on my first day I removed my sim card and put another sim card on G3 then i was happy the problem was gone.

But since I need the original sim I put it back to G3 after a day then the problem came back.

Now I am not using my original sim and I am using my replacement sim and it didn't show any signs of the problems.

I wish I could say it was the case, but I have a counterexample, unfortunately. I baked my mobo, put it back in with aluminum foil and Arctic Silver to fill the gaps. I had bought a replacement, so I put a data-only sim from another device in my G3, and put Cyanogenmod on it. This worked for a time (so goeth the rhyme) but after a couple of weeks the flicker returned.

I think it's a hardware issue, sadly.

added 4 layers of underwear carton on top of camera connector pushed the back cover to close it.
Tried overheating it to 60° by recording 4k camera running apps etc.
It didnt fade to black.
Doing great... (for now? lol)

Well it was one of the solution BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING TO YOUR PHONE (eg. Adding paper to camera, re-applying thermal paste, baking / overheating etc).... So I suggest do this step first in case you haven't tried anything from the list above. It was a simple solution that solved my problem. I had the problem last Monday (21-Mar) and after replacing my original SIM card. THE PROBLEM NEVER RETURNED UNTIL NOW. Not even the Overheating issue.

So it works on my case. And I am sharing it to others who haven't "opened/touched" their G3.

I hope you'll find a solution for your G3.

What does the sim touch? The motherboard. So still likely the motherboard is the culprit not the SIM.

Well, as I predicted, the fix was only temporary. A few days ago, the screen started to have the fading issue again, meaning that even with my severely decreased usage and my best attempts to keep the phone cool, the bake only ended up working for 12 days. The good news is that the G5 will be released at the end of this week, so I would expect that by May the price for a new/used G3 motherboard will have dropped to a new low. So I just have to make do for about a month. One other note is that, even though the problem has returned, it is still not as bad as it was pre-bake. I also haven't even gotten around to makeshift fixes like putting the paper/rubber under the cover (which I'm thinking works because it decreases the air gap between the aluminum chassis and the CPU), applying thermal paste to the CPU, and making a sink. I'm hoping that once I work these things in, the fix will hold until the price drop, but that might just be the optimist in me. I'll post another weekly update after I implement the makeshift fixes, though they've been shown to be only temporary, so I'm not sure of the value added in doing so. I'm also doubtful that the SIM card is the root issue, as has been mentioned in other posts. If the SIM card were the root issue, then I would expect that I would've seen similar problems when I put it in the Leon, but I didn't. Still, I could be missing something and it definitely won't hurt to try, so I might give it a shot if these other fixes don't hold for long.

Bake it, I tried every thing else. I had mine baked and it has been running perfectly for two weeks plus now. The only problem now is that it restarts every once in a while when the camera app is running.

How much would you guys say the motherboard will cost when the G5 comes out? And would it be possible to buy it separately without paying for the whole phone?

Difficult to say. It may take several weeks for prices to drop. And yes if you dig around I'm sure you can find motherboards online

Just got it. Flickered and faded to black as soon as I turned it on. Sending it back to LG for the THIRD TIME!!!! I even hand wrote a note and included it with the phone that said, "Please check/replace the motherboard. The LCD is fine".

If you have this problem, cut your losses and buy a new phone. LG either can't or won't do anything about this. I'm done with LG. Period.
Repair attempt #3:
Defect:
Main Display-No screen
Repair Results:
LCD (Main/Sub)

...FML

Right now, you can find G3 motherboards online for ~120-150 USD. I would expect that the price would drop to ~100, but, as dancing-bass said, it will take weeks for it to go down (I'm going to guess May/June). I'm hoping that the price will drop quickly and by a decent amount, the reason being that it will have been just around 2 years since the G3 came out, a point at which people are more prone to buy a new phone (as opposed to yearly).

Additional note: If you do attempt to use the "paper trick," I think using a thin piece of rubber may work better (e.g. from a cut piece of rubber band), as opposed to a piece of paper. I'm guessing that one of the reasons the "paper trick" is such a brief fix for some people is that the paper, being continually compressed, eventually starts to flatten over time. Since the whole point is for the paper to press down on the board, the flatter/thinner it gets, the less effective it is. Others have used rubber and it's worked well for them, so it might be worth it to give it a shot.

Back to square one after trying it all, guess even Jason Statham cannot fix it. Bought a Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro and very happy now.

Wait.... Didn't they already replace the LCD?
Yes. Repair 1 was LCD. Repair 2 was HDMI. Repair 3 was LCD again. I've been sending it in with post-its stuck to the phone saying, "Replace the motherboard". Seems they aren't getting the message. Waiting for FedEx to deliver, but not getting my hopes up.

Having the flickering issue for so long without a solution, decided to break the phone into pieces then throw in trash today. I believe I did the best thing.
Bye bye LG
Never buy you anymore.
