Why does my Nexus 7 keep crashing when updating to Android 5.1?

Nexus 7 keeps crashing when updating to android 5.1

My Nexus 7 keeps telling me I have the 5.1 update available but every time I do it it downloads it and starts to install it then says error and just comes back on. I've tried a factory reset and this hasn't helped. Can I download the file to my mac (I have a windows computer available if needs be) and install it that way, if so where do I download an official version from?

try manually flashing it using minimal ADB and Google's factory image of 5. 1. 1
just google "Google developer page" or "nexus factory images". for the flashable factory images and also download minimal ADB I've always used a Windows laptop as it works best for me
