Why does my notification light stay on even tho I have never turned the light on?

So there is a light in the top speaker that is staying on even when I don't have any notifications. Sometimes it get dimmer and then gets bright again at irregular intervals. I have a Moto G 3rd gen and have never even seen this light in the almost 2 years I have had it. Oh, also it stays on even when the phone is off.

Welcome to Android Central. From what I see on the web that LED can only be turned on if the phone has been rooted. See this:

Go into settings and check to see if the device has an update due. If not also go into settings and go down to LCD notification settings to see if you have anything enable you're not aware of.
