Why does my sound settings in messages app from google not work

My sound settings for my notifications are set to silent. Every time I try to change it it says it has stopped working why can’t I change it

Welcome to Android Central! Go to Settings>Apps, then tap Menu>Reset All App Preferences. Now try choosing a different notification tone -- does it ask your to select an app this time to complete the action?
