Why does Nexus 5's screen flash/blink when calling?

i've noticed this , when calling, the screen is flashing/blinking. whenever im calling the customer support of some company, it's really hard to press those numbers coz the screen is flashing. :-\

Its probably the proximity sensor. If you hit the speaker icon, the screen will stay on. The prox sensor is in the top right corner, make sure it's not covered.
